editI thought it was odd to read about some "little persia" designation when every fellow LA Persian that I know calls it Tehrangeles. With the NY Times article this morning I have taken the effort to further beef-up the article knowing that I finally have something tangible to back up what I already knew was correct (however, in light of all the challenges going on over any article refering to any Persian people or sub-set, I wanted to have some ground to stand on). -- Bobak 15:41, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- "Little Persia" refers to the area along Westwood Blvd. between Wilshire and Pico or SM Blvd. Tehrangeles is a name given to all of Los Angeles' Persian community, including for example the Valley, OC, and Persians living elsewhere in the LA basin outside of Westwood. These articles should not be merged. Arspickles17 06:57, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Percentage of Persians in Beverly Hills
editI was happy to see the 20% number from NPR. I once did a project at Beverly Hills HS and I was stunned at the percentage of students that were Persian. It seemed higher than 20%, of course many of the non-Persians in BH may simply send kids to private schools or be empty nesters. Too bad BHHS doesn't list their ethnic breakdown (which would be complicated because many Persians, like myself, check "white" when given the choice of no "other" or "Persian"). --Bobak 23:52, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Picture
editThe top photograph on this page seems irrelevant and weirdly framed for an article on an ethnic enclave. If anyone has a picture of some Persian shops or something in the area it would probably be more apt Arspickles17 09:07, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Arspickles17
Iran v. Persia
editAs Babak has correctly stated, "Persian" refers to the dominant ethnic group of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Also, "Tehrangeles" refers to the large concentration of ethnic Persians in Los Angeles, a throwback to Tehran, the current cultural center of the ethnic Persian population of the Middle East. However, even if Tehran is a city composed mostly of Persians, it is still a part of the political (and not ethnic) entity of Iran. Accordingly, when we discuss Tehran, we discuss it as a political (and not ethnic) entity, and thus we refer to the country it resides in as Iran(not "Persia") since we are speaking politically.
Similarly, we do not refer to Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan as "Mazar-i-Sharif, Hazara-stan" or Kandahar, Afghanistan as "Kandahar, Pushtun-land". This is mixing ethnicity and political nomenclature, and is incorrect.

Persian was never an ethnic/racial categorization. I suggest reading this editorial.

- Call yourself whatever you want. I'm Persian. I have friends who call themselves Assyrian. That editorial is just an opinion and in my opinion, irrelevant. --Bobak 17:46, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think the United States distinguishes Persians from Iranians, so wouldn't Iranian-American be the more appropriate terminology? I highly doubt Azeris are considered Azerbaijani-Americans, unless they are actually from (North) Azerbaijan. -68.43.58.42 (talk) 03:09, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
removed from article, useless trivia section:
Tehrangeles in pop culture
editThe large Persian population in Los Angeles, particularly in and around Beverly Hills, has found its way into several mediums:
- In the 1995 comedy film Clueless a Persian student at the fictionalized Bronson Alcott High School curses out a teacher in Persian and a later scene where the protagonist explicitly describes the "Persian Mafia":
- "And that's the Persian mafia. You can't hang with them unless you own a BMW or Mercedes Benz, and a cellular phone."
- In the 1994 action-comedy film Beverly Hills Cop III, an automated gate at the Beverly Hills Police Department offers a selection of languages that include Persian.
- The 2005 Oscar Best Picture winner, Crash, dealt with racism, stereotyping, hypocrisy, and crime in the L.A. area and among the central characters, all of whom are of different races, one is a Persian, stereotyped as one who doesn't trust others. The film contains some dialog in Persian.
- In the new 90210, there is a main character named Navid Shirazi, who is Persian.
Amount of Iranians in Los Angeles
editThe main wiki article states there are about 700k-800k Iranian "nationals" residing in Los Angeles....which I find hard to believe considering the US census has the Iranian population (in the whole of America) at 450k. And the Wiki article 'Iranian American' has the US Iranian population lower than the total Iranian population residing in Los Angeles lol.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.71.152.118 (talk) 23:12, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Westwood
editMany Iranian stores and businesses are in Westwood. Can the stores and businesses be listed in the article? --207.233.110.67 (talk) 19:21, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
