Name and founding date

edit

If the university's official name is Tennessee Technical University, shouldn't that be the article's title? Usage shouldn't dictate page names. On a similar issue, the actual founding IMO would be 1909, not the date of the name's adoption, 1915. This is true of most if not all entities - they're founded when they start, not when they're re-named.Allreet (talk) 17:35, 28 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

General Usage, as an alumni, is Tennessee Tech, even in most non-admission marketing prompts. I would agree the header should be somewhat equivalent to the title and would not be against a renaming to the full 'Tennessee Technological University'. See here for an example of 'Tennessee Tech'
As for Dixie College to Polytech to Tech, the University was (as it is today) wasn't founded until 1915, as supported by the official college site. Dixie College was the original higher education site that existed in cookeville before TN Tech. Essentially, TN Tech just absorbed the already built buildings of Dixie College, and some of the student base, but was a completely different university than Dixie College. It should still be mentioned because of the heritage and history, however Dixie and Polytech are still two distinct universities (to my knowledge as a former Trailblazer (student tour guide) and alumni) ChemicalBear (talk) 18:42, 29 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
With respect to the article's name, please see WP:COMMONNAME. In brief, we don't rely on a subject's "official name" but we try to use the name that is most commonly used in reliable sources. For the founding date, we also try to stick with what's supported by reliable sources. ElKevbo (talk) 19:25, 29 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
