Odd critique
editI don't understand the note appended to the beginning of the article criticizing it for relying too much on "primary sources".
Usually it is considered better scholarship to use primary sources, and replacing secondary or tertiary sources with primary sources would be considered an improvement -- not the other way around. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.95.43.249 (talk) 20:31, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Latin
editWolfe states in the "Note on the Translation" appendix to The Shadow of the Torturer that Latin is used "to indicate that inscriptions and the like are in a language Severian appears to consider obsolete. What the actual language may have been, I cannot say", so a potential translation being a grammatically awkward translation of actual Latin isn't really a problem.
