This does not appear to be an actual award, but rather an opinion piece in a blog intended as a way of criticising bot Dolan and living people. I don't know anything about this site. If their opinions are noteworthy then it should be rewritten to clearly attribute the source. Something like, "In 2006 the Pensito Review considered nominees for a Terry Dolan Award which listed supposedly gay Republicans who..." Thanks for checking that out. I just now deleted the "award" and the section. I didn't look at the source when I visited the article af few hours earlier. I hadn't visited this article in a long time, and was dismayed to see that it had been revised to make it sound like Dolan was notable primarily for being a closeted gay person. He was well-known in his lifetime (and reviled by people like me) for his role as a formidable New Right political operative, which is the basis for his notability. The bizarre fact of his closeted homosexuality was not known until after his death, and should not become the sole focus of the article. --Orlady (talk) 03:57, 6 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Removed "An outspoken critic of gay rights." I worked at NCPAC in 1982 and again in 1984, and saw the tension between Dolan, a libertarian and closeted gay, and the Moral Majority conservatives who made up other elements of the political Right. Dolan and NCPAC avoided gay issues. The Frank Rich piece cited is inaccurate and not source material, it was not a NCPAC letter. The Gallagher piece and Shilts book cite evidence that Dolan was gay, not that he was a critic of gay rights.
