Here's a 1936-1940 map that shows it. It puts it on 7th Street from the present location of IH 35 (which was upgraded from a surface boulevard) east to Comal Street, and possibly north on Comal Street to 9th Street. That matches the post-1939 description.
This 1919 map has no highway numbers (they had just been designated in 1917), but shows 6th Street as the main paved road out of town to the east (turning south at Calles Street to 5th Street). 6th Street may have been US 290 originally; it had moved to Cesar Chavez Street on the 1940 map.
Loop 343 was designated in 1961, and is shown on this 1958-1961 map. It used 7th Street, Neches Street and 5th Street (later a one-way pair), and was removed from 7th Street in 1987. This 1998 map clearly shows the current situation. (This 1954 map shows the old configuration before Loop 343.) --SPUI (T - C - RFC - Curpsbot problems) 19:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
