Merger proposal

edit

I think the articles Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre Lyrique should be merged into one, under the name Théâtre de la Ville. It is the same theatre, with the article Théâtre Lyrique, providing more detailed history on some accounts.--Atavi (talk) 17:35, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The articles don't correspond exactly - can you explain the relationship a bit more? If they are separate theatres, that existed in different eras, then perhaps they should stay as separate articles? --Kleinzach 14:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The two theatres are the same building and organization. The building was built in 1862 by Baron Haussmann and has been in continuous existence since then. Over time it has born different names, as you probably have read in the Théâtre de la Ville article. The repertoire staged has also changed.
The French article also establishes that, although it mentions that since 1996 there has also been a different building Théâtre des Abbesses associated with Théâtre de la Ville.
That's all I guess. I don't view them as separate entities.
But, all I know about the theatre(s) is what I read in the WP articles.

There is much confusion about that because over the time character of those theatres changed over the time. Historically, Theatre Lyrique is older and it was (in middle of 19th century the Opera House, and even before Baron H. build his building in 1862, I have the record that Faust was premiered there in 1858 (sic! before creation of that building?) The French Wikipedia article does not contain ANY reference to history of Theatre Lyrique as an Opera House (which is strange to me, and proving that they, French, lost such important part of their history, somehow.

The reason why I created separate Theatre Lyrique article is that it was so important historically. I really do not know if they are connected or not. Anyway, that original Opera House buidling burn down completely in 1871 (Paris Commune?) and have note that it was rebuild later on. To merge it or not is I think premature. What I know I read only from some Web-site references about that, but did not read that crown book which reference I attached to my article: "Theatre Lyrique during Second Empire, 1852-1971." And, to that extend, some better expert should decide if those buildings are connected or not.

I agree that the two articles should not be merged. We are talking about two different things: on he one hand a company, the Théâtre-Lyrique, which occupied different buildings; and on the other hand, a particular theater, which took different names and housed several companies throughout its history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Corydon04 (talkcontribs) 23:04, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
