After reading the story, it seems that John does not include May in his life not for her sake, but rather because his involvement with her may somehow distract him or cause him to miss the great event that is to happen to him. He is solely concerned with himself and does not bother to worry about May until her faltering health/death becomes such a startling epiphany for him that he begins to consider another.
Style
editThe style of the article is not NPOV. Ze miguel 11:53, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
"learns that the great misfortune of his life was to throw it away, and to ignore the love of a good woman, based upon his preposterous sense of premature ejaculation." Prehaps this metaphor for premature ejaculation should be included in analysis, rather than plot summary? Stearnsbrian 05:19, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
I have reverted the asinine vandalism. Some kids get their rocks off by typing "premature ejaculation" in an anonymous edit. The vandalism occurred January 31 from IP 38.115.60.85. There was far more serious vandalism on Wiki from the same IP on December 12, which was quickly reverted. I'll keep an eye on this IP from now on. Casey Abell 13:03, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
NPOV-violation is still a big problem. --Chips Critic 03:35, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
NPOV requires that the critical consensus on a literary work be acknowledged and given respect (though not slavishy followed). I believe the current article accurately reflects the critical consensus that The Beast in the Jungle is one of the most important short narratives in the English language. I'll leave it to each reader to decide if the NPOV tag is justified. Casey Abell 02:35, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, after further thought, I reluctantly toned down the praise for the story and removed the NPOV tag. The critical consensus remains overwhelmingly positive on this story, but the article is now phrased in a more neutral fashion. Casey Abell 18:35, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
