Helmuth's father had left his family so things had been tough until his mother married a man named Hugo which loved the Nazis. Although a plot summary is useful in the context of the article, it has been removed for the third time because it is largely inarticulate and unreadable. I haven't read the novel, so I don't feel comfortable "cleaning up" the prose for fear I might get the facts of the story incorrect.
