Disambiguating Church of God denominations

In connection with my activity as a senior editor and editor for the Tennessee category at the Open Directory Project, I have become aware of the confusing aspects of the different denominations called "Church of God," and of the fact that several such denominations all have their world headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. Much confusion results from the fact that various different groups all claim to be the one true "Church of God" or "The Church of God." In the interest of being able to inform people about the genealogy and relationships of different "Churches of God", I think it is important to have articles about all of the different groups, including those that resort to using the name of a city or the name of a person to disambiguate themselves from the other similarly named churches.--orlady 22:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I am not affiliated with this church, nor any other "Church of God." The closest I come to that is that I have occasionally been to public events inside a building belonging to a local congregation of one of these denominations. My interest is totally as an outside observer trying to organize information (I need a scorecard to tell the players apart). To my way of thinking, a denomination that claims to be represented in 24 U.S. states and 13 nations is probably sufficiently notable to be discussed in an article.--orlady 22:33, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

In all fairness to this being termed insignificant splinter, for the record, there is a splinterThe Church of God for All Nations off of the same family tree, that claims to being much smaller than this denomination claims to be. Biblemanryan 03:37, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Object to proposed deletion

I have looked in vain for a definition of "significant" denomination. I figure if people say their denomination is the only true church, it's hard to tell them their denomination isn't significant. I suspect that the issue with this article is not the size or other attributes of the denomination, but rather the unusual name of the article. In any event, I am finding evidence that this church has more than a handful of adherents. I have searched for web information about the significance of this particular group. I can't always tell which faction a TCOG group belongs to, but here are a few sites I found that indicate that the Nabors church truly has a real (and non-local) following:

• The Church of God, Brownwood, Texas - "We are not affiliated with any other organization but The Church of God, of which James C. Nabors is General Overseer."
• The Church of God in Wisconsin and N. Illinois - Names the church as "The Church of God, with General Headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee." Lists James C. Nabors as General Overseer. Lists two member congregations.
• The Church of God - La Iglesia de Dios / Southwest Region ~ Región de Southwest - General Overseer/Supervisor General: James C. Nabors. Site lists 11 pastors in five different U.S. states.

I removed the tag., It has consistently been strongly maintained and supported at AfD that all denominations however small are notable. There is realy no other rule that can let us escape unending controversy. How many Christians were in the first Church? How many followers did Mohammed have at first?DGG 05:56, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
