Trophy dates
editIf this trophy has only been in existence since 1986, why does the chart go back to 1950? Woodshed (talk) 17:27, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- It's because the Trophy has been rewarded retroactively to all teams who finished #1 in the Coach's Poll from 1950 to 1985. Also note, the AFCA is currently in the midst of extending these retroactive rewards to the 1922-1949 period. Oklahoma A&M (State) just today (10/13/16) was awarded the 1945 AFCA National Championship and Trophy.[1] Bobharris1989 (talk) 17:45, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Historic UP Trophy / UPI Trophy Coaches Poll trophies
editUsing this section to track the historic Coaches Poll trophies prior to the 1986 introduction of the familiar "crystal football".
Appears to have been an annual award for each school to keep, rather than a traveling trophy like the early AP Trophies.
Trophies

I've been unable to find any original United Press Cup / United Press Trophy / UP Cup / UP Trophy award for any of the above schools in contemporary reporting or photographs.
In June 1956 the San Francisco Dons basketball team was awarded a "new" trophy by United Press. The same article seems to announce that a football trophy would first be awarded for 1956:
- "The award, an 18-inch gold trophy topped by the figure of a basketball player... A similar trophy will be awarded annually to the college football team chosen as the national champion by the United Press football board of coaches."
The 1956 Oklahoma Sooners team was awarded the first(?) UP trophy on the Sunday December 9, 1956 episode of the Ed Sulivan Show.

edit- 1986 Penn State The first crystal football seems to be displayed resting on a pillow, without its ebony stand. Unclear if the 1986 trophy ever had a stand.

Blue Ribbon Commission Trophy
editSeen on Facebook and Google Maps where Texas A&M has a retroactive Coaches Trophy (from Blue Ribbon Commission process) for 1939. Have tried to get from other sources to be able to share & confirm, but haven't had success. 2605:59C8:5062:EF10:F5CC:DB56:8094:5760 (talk) 15:43, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
