'Storm-Bird, Storm Dreamer' is a short story from JG Ballard's collection 'The Disaster Area'.
In the story which takes place on the coast of an abandoned shore with 'damp meadows' lies a moored picket ship whose captain, Crispin, is the sole member. He is defending his ship from 'immense white creatures' which can fly. As he shoots these doves, a woman who lives in a house on the beach, collects the feathers from the corpses which have started to build up into a heap. With the help of a dwarf, Quimby, she is making from the feathers a 'pergola'. Crispin is asked to help, but one night upsets the woman by killing a bird at her house. Crispin understands that the woman 'thinks she is a bird'. He wears the hollow carcass of the bird so that he too can make a flight. In flight the woman shoots him in the chest. She collects the feathers off him to continue with her nest for the bird that 'would bring her back her son'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.1.127.20 (talk • contribs) 2014-06-11T06:29:02
