At last count this totaled over 40 names and references, some of which are mentioned in the text (and don't need reiterating) and others of which appear tangential. Someone will need to pare this list down quite a bit. MarmadukePercy (talk) 22:04, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Stick to the book!

The article has failed to give a clear idea of what Darwin wrote and argued in the book. It diverts too often into long discussions of Darwin's life & career (which have already been covered in this wiki almost ad nauseam). What the reader wants to see on this page is a summary of Darwin's presented facts and arguments on the special topic of the book. A certain amount of assessment as to how these ideas stand up today would be acceptable also. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:45, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

I've taken an axe to quite a bit of the rambling, and have split off "Illustrations" and "Publication" sections. There is a clear gap for a "Reception" section (for reviews, with citations). The description of the book itself needs expanding. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:40, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Notebook italicization?

Should the Notebooks (D, M, and N) be italicized? Currently, some are, and some are not (I will italicize all of them for consistency, but I would still like some discussion on this). The notebooks are not published works, nor is "Notebook" part of the title; Darwin refers to the notebooks by their letter (D, M, and N). I have seen the notebooks being referred to as "the 'M' notebook" and "Notebook M" (or whichever letter notebook is discussed).
I see a few options to choose from (prepare yourself for some confusing suggestions):

• "Notebook M" – referring to it as the title of a minor work (as per MOS:NOITALIC)
• Notebook "M" – referring to "M" as a part of a collection of notebooks ("Notebook")
• notebook "M", the "M" notebook, and "M" – since "Notebook" is not actually part of the name (depending on who you ask)
• Notebook M – referring to it as the title of a major work (as per MOS:ITALICTITLE)
• Notebook M – referring to "M" as a part of a collection of notebooks ("Notebook")
• notebook M, the M notebook, and M – since "Notebook" is not actually part of the name (depending on who you ask)

Both MOS:ITALICTITLE and MOS:NOITALIC seem to apply. I would love some input on this! Kindly, Pinecone23 (talk) 17:05, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
