It is disturbing to read that the writer of this article knows more about the making of Garota de Ipanema than its composers do. In interviews, both Tom Jobim and Vinicios de Moraes have said that Helo Pinheiro was their muse. They both said that Helo Pinheiro was the Garota de Ipanema; they then said it became the symbol of every Carioca girl (by the way, Carioca is anyone from Rio, boy or girl). For the writer of this article to presume he or she knows more about the making of this song than the authors of the music is at best arrogant.
I did not fix it because I believe it is the responsibility of the one who wrote the article to do a little more research and fix it. I did fix a quote (I found it in a Brazilian site and it had a few mistakes when put in Wikipedia). I also fixed the translation since the writer gave us permission to do so in the "Talk page". About the lawsuit, it was brought about by the widow of Tom Jobim... It has been in legal limbo probably because there are many interviews whereby the authors of the song have stated that the Girl from Ipanema was Helo Pinheiro and the composers allowed her to use the title before they passed away. It may be considered a frivolous lawsuit, since Girl from Ipanema means the girl who is from the Ipanema neighborhood. It is tantamount as the Beatles suing a girl named Michelle for opening a boutique named Michelle. It may be the name of one of their songs, but they do not own the name Michelle for everything. The writer should have included this as a part of the information, since English speakers may not know that Ipanema is a beach and a neighborhood. Are Cander and Ebb suing every pizza parlour named New York? Same principle. Bossa Nova Witness (talk) 04:00, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Bossa Nova Witness |
