Upton Sinclair said in either his foreward or introductioin to the book that colleges & universities were not teaching freedom, but slavery, referring to the capitalist wage system. Could we add that somewhere? Sundiiiiii 20:29, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

I believe the quote you refer to is p. ix: "Suppose I were to tell you that this educational machine has been stolen?...That our six hundred thousand young people are being taught, deliberately and of set purpose, not wisdom but folly, not justice but greed, not freedom but slavery, not love but hate?" I don't think an addition is necessary. Sinclair doesn't really address the capitalist WAGE SYSTEM in the book, except when he talks about the (pre-tenure) professors being afraid to speak out - which, however, he does throughout the book. It's one of his major concerns. Sinclair is mostly concerned with capitalism as a) the creator of the vast fortunes of the trustees who run the universities, and b) the only ideology students are allowed to learn about. Yes, that's the exact sentence, thank you. Now did you read what you wrote? (Sorry to use caps, but I apparently need it to show emphasis.) You said "Sinclair doesn't really address the capitalist WAGE SYSTEM in the book, EXCEPT ..." He wrote the whole book to prove that capitalist wage-slavery is slavery, & that's why he wrote "the Jungle" too, but most people never could see that. You said the professors were afraid to speak out, which he mentioned throughout the book, see? They were afraid because of the capitalist wage system: afraid they'd get fired and blacklisted, & couldn't ever get another job, & they & their families (with children) would starve, & that's capitalism. Yes it's one of his major concerns because he is showing throughout the book that the wage system is a slave system. Then you said "Sinclair is mostly concerned with capitalism as a) the creator of the VAST FORTUNES of the trustees who run the universities, and b) the ONLY ideology students are ALLOWED to learn about." Don't you see that's how they kept Americans blinded to our own slavery? If they can't learn about any other way, how can they question the way we have; namely the WAGE? How can they say "What if all people owned all things? And then food & medicine would be free because no one could FORCE people to BUY food & meds from themselves (the owners) so it's all free? Most people still say "If not work for a wage, then what?" People born into slavery (wages) don't know they're slaves. Sinclair also wrote "The Brass Check" which shows clearly how the media (owned by people like William Randolph Hearst) manipulated every word the Americans heard, so they couldn't possibly ever think of another way besides the wage. Hearst was, of course, one of the rich slave masters who probably dreamed up the words "red scare" to scare people & make them think that communism would be slavery & not freedom, instead of capitalist slavery for wages, because HE OWNED so much property, etc, that HE didn't want to lose HIS PRIVATE PROPERTY or HIS PERSONAL WEALTH! HE couldn't SELL his thousands of acres (500,000--land stolen from Native Americans) in CA. to poor hard-working slaves to MAKE HIM RICHER STILL. And the people bought his lies because they thought "We have to be able to OWN OUR OWN PROPERTY" even if they had to PAY HEARST too much money to do that! And be in debt their whole lives to HIM, a rich capitalist slave master! DEBT is not freedom, it's slavery! It's the reason we're all forced to pay TAXES!

Also, the quote was "...That our six hundred thousand young people are being taught, deliberately and of set purpose, NOT WISDOM BUT FOLLY, NOT JUSTICE BUT GREED, NOT FREEDOM BUT SLAVERY, NOT LOVE BUT HATE?" See, they're being TAUGHT TO BE EVIL, so of course they end up being evil! And capitalist all say "Why are people so evil?" Duh! Sinclair is saying that our brightest people are being taught HATE, not love! That's horrible to let it go on & should be stopped now because it was always wrong. They're being taught folly not wisdom! Greed instad of justice! Slavery instead of freedom! How can you say the book is not about capitalism when that's what the whole book is trying to show people? Please think about this. I'm sorry this had to be so long. I hope Jamie doesn't get angry, or any of you, but I had to explain this & it takes more than a few words.

PS--You know what happened at Virginia Tech, 33 dead? That was caused by CAPITALISM because Cho was angry at "rich kids" & that is because capitalism causes unequal wealth which of course causes bitter envy & strife, & thus all crimesk, & wars, & suicides, & every evil work in this whole world. So how can we let this system go on any longer?? We can't let highly praised universities TEACH all people to be SLAVES, to hate, to be greedy, to be unwise & do everything wrong, like "creating the most JOBS" making WEAPONS that KILL MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, & that includes all AUTOMOBILES too! Teaching "rugged individualism" was thought by many to be wrong, & rightly so, because people can't LIVE LONG by being selfish rugged individualists! We're like ants & we can't survive unless we ALL act like one big COLONY worldwide, which is owned by ALL PEOPLE worldwide. And none of the universities should have been built, nor cars, nor malls & strip malls (to RENT to slaves who think they "own their own business") because it has caused LOTS of crime & death. All attempts at SOCIAL JUSTICE (Socialism & even Communism) has failed BECAUSE the USA (the RICH) has placed embargoes, sanctions, etc, against countries who WANT SOCIAL JUSTICE which of course forces them to be poor & FAIL. WE caused all that failure & death by BUILDING EVERYTHING WRONG, but we sure looked "good" doing it, didn't we?! Oh yes, if not cars, houses & small buildings, what should we have built? TOWER CITIES connected to maglev TRAINS, that's what. It would have saved millions of lives from CAR CRASH DEATHS & disabilities, crime deaths & resulting disablities, insurance-caused deaths, natural-disaster-caused deaths, wars, suicides, & every problem! Also see the first paragraph of the article: “Our educational system is not a public service, but an instrument of special privilege; its purpose is not to further the welfare of mankind, but merely to keep America capitalist. To establish this thesis is the purpose of ‘The Goose-step.’” Again the purpose of this book is to KEEP AMERICA CAPITALIST; that's slavery. That's not what you said in your response to me.
