So, the novel wasn't published in 1954. Certain chapters appeared in the New Yorker and various publications, which is why the copyright date goes back to 1954. The abebooks source isn't reliable— especially because it claims it's the thirteenth edition; it's just repeating the copyright date of chapters published earlier..
