editI removed the section "The Highway Code" for a number of reasons:
- It had many grammatical mistakes
- It contained a number of factual errors such as getting a criminal record
- It did not have any references
Copyright Issues
editIf anyone want's my suggestion, why don't we get some one from the UK to rewrite the offending part and call it a day, the seems like a lot of over kill.--The Navigators (talk)-May British Rail Rest in Peace. 00:28, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Foreign language links
editWhat about interwiki links for Rules of the Road (Ireland) and Driver's manual? --AVRS (talk) 20:04, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
E.g. ru:Правила дорожного движения and eo:Trafika regularo are general, about official rules. Traffic regulations lists several articles and a category Category:Rules of the road. Why is Highway Code the best fit? Traffic mentions some informal rules though, maybe a language difference. --AVRS (talk) 20:15, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Inter-language links are two-way links. Unless you go to all of the other languages and remove the English link, a BOT will probably reinstate the link. Martinvl (talk) 20:21, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- I was going to the other languages and removing links. --AVRS (talk) 20:40, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Have you actually looked at the other articles you mentioned? They are one-liners with a link to the offical government document. If these other articles ever get beyond the one-line stage, that is the time to address the problem.
- Wikipedia is full of the anomalies that you mention. If this annoys you , then improcve the articles so that the links are meaningful, but please don't just dump them - some people find them useful! Martinvl (talk) 20:21, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

The articles which I am pretty sure are general: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q3074&oldid=262099. Notice the general French article, which is different from the one on Highway Code. --AVRS (talk) 20:44, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I restored the section I had created on a Russian forum, which has been archived by a bot; and put there some lists. --AVRS (talk) 21:16, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Before you start trying to right great wrongs, please look carefully at what has emerged ac ross all languages. Do these artciles describe the British Highway Code, or do they describe the rule of the road in the country(ies) to which that language belongs? I think the latter and that the French article on the Highway Code is an anomaly. Martinvl (talk) 21:28, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- The only other article on the UK Highway Code is the Welsh one. I’ve added English comments to ru:Википедия:Форум/Интервики#Правила_дорожного_движения, check it. --AVRS (talk) 08:28, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- You also deleted the links on the Welsh page to other languages. I have re-instated them. Martinvl (talk) 09:08, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

- I have again reinstated the inter-wiki links. The article is entitled "Highway code", not "The Higway Code". (See WP:DEFINITE regarding the use if the definite article in the title of an artcile. Aa such, the article should deal not only with the booklet "The Highway Code", but with associated matters. As such, it is entiorely proper that it be linked to relevant artciles in other languages. If anybody want to do anything useful in this article, then please align the article name with the article contents.Martinvl (talk) 08:12, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
- In light of the above discussion, I have reverted changes made by User:Dainful. If anybody want to write about the Irish and the Northern Irish equivalents, please feel free to do so. Martinvl (talk) 10:24, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, this article has always been about the UK Highway Code booklets, and nothing else. The mention in the main article text of the Republic of Ireland and Maltese equivalents are not relevant - or where do we stop - we would have to mention every similar publication from anywhere in the world. If the article title is wrong in that context, then, presumably, we can change it. There are some similar publications from elsewhere mentioned in the 'See also' section too, but I don't think they belong there either - they could all be grouped in a "category" perhaps?Dainful (talk) 18:57, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
Incorrect page title and URL
editCan someone, who knows how to do these things, change the page title to 'The Highway Code' and add The_ to the url...
...since the topic on the page is clearly about The Highway Code and not highway codes in general although I appreciate there are references and links to other similar codes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.150.252.117 (talk) 23:18, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Good idea! I'll try and figure out how to.Dainful (talk) 18:58, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
- I suggest that you look at this reference. This will explain the difference between the titles "Highway Code" and "The Highway Code".
- Also, if you look for the reference The Highway Code, you will bwe directed back to this artcile, but there will be some small text "Redirected from The Highway Code". Click on that text and you will be taken to the article "The Highway Code".
- Finally, please get a bit more experiennce of Wikipedia before messing around with the article titles. Martinvl (talk) 14:15, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- This article is about "The Highway Code", th UK road rules booklet, so why not call it that as it explains in this reference?Dainful (talk) 21:39, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- This artcile is about the British booklet and it makes references to other simiar booklets. It was first written about nine years ago and has not really developed apart from the odd sentence by various motoring enthusiasts. The appropriate way forward as I see it is to expand the sections on the other booklets and to have a proper introductory section to cover all the booklets. It might beven be appropriate to incorporate the article Green Cross Code into the Highway Code article. Together they could form a good article, especially as there is considerable overlap between the articles. I suspect that [the Republic of] Ireland's booklet and the Matltese booklet are strongly influenced by the British booklet; I am almost certain that teh NI booklet and teh British booklet are almost indistinguishable.
- Whatever you do, DO NOT remove the discussion about other country's booklets. If you do, I will revert. If you feel that "The Highway Code" desreves an article that is separate from "Highway Code", then go ahead, split the two, but please ensure that they cross-reference each other in a user-friendly manner otherwise some poor sod will have to repair the damage. Martinvl (talk) 22:16, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- I don't really understand your point. "Highway Code" isn't the generic term for all road safety booklets. The capital "C" suggests it is only THE Highway Code, with the "The" missing. If YOU want to write another article about various booklets and codes, go ahead, but think of a suitable name for it too. This, as others have realised, is a slightly misnamed article - which needs fixing.Dainful (talk) 22:27, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- As I said earlier, please do not discard large amounts of text to change the meaning of an article. If that text is encyclopeadic (which in this case it is), please ensure that you save it somehow. Martinvl (talk) 07:47, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- The ROI content is outside of the scope of this article, so why include it - especially as it has its own article? Shall we also include comparisons with all similar publications from other countries? Dainful (talk) 12:29, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- P.S. I have now moved the ROI content to Rules of the Road (Ireland). Dainful (talk) 12:40, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- What is your plan for linking the various articles together? Do you plan an umbrella article. WIll teh umbrella artcile cross-link forwards and backwards? If so, please write that first. Also consider how you intend cross-linking to other Wikipedia in other languages. This is not just about one booklet - it is about an enviroments into which the article about that booklet will fit. Martinvl (talk) 15:38, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
I have looked up some guidance on what Dainfull is doing.
The first section that I came to was at WP:ANOTHER. Basically this says that if text is not approriate for this artcile then it should be moved into another article, not discarded. This is roughly what I wrote in the previous posting.
The second section that I came across was WP:SIZERULE. This rule states that if an article (excluding citations etc) is less than 40 kbyes, then length is not a criteria to split it. The article Highway COde is 8112 bytes. The article Green Cross Code is 7100 bytes. If these two articles were combined into a single article, there is scope to triple its length and still be within limits. The article name could be "Road safety guidance in English-speaking Europe". This would give scope to include the Irish and the Maltese road safety codes. "The Highway Code" woudl constitute a section of such an article. If you are willing to do the research, you coudl create a decent article out of these fragments and a bit of other text to link the pieces together.
Martinvl (talk) 20:43, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- I, in turn, have read the links that Martinvl quotes.
- The first at WP:ANOTHER does NOT say that inappropriate text should be moved not discarded, it merely describes a methodology for moving information from one article into another. However, funnily enough, on the very same page, we DO see the appropriate section, "WP:IRRELEVANT", which does describe what to do with information that clearly has no relevance; it "should be removed". Granted, it also goes on to say that "if the text does appear to belong in another article, it can and probably should be moved there." Which is EXACTLY what I did with it, and I explained that in my edit summary; I moved it to Rules of the Road (Ireland). So following Martinvl's re-instatement of that inappropriate text to this article, we now have it duplicated in both articles.
- As for WP:SIZERULE; that doesn't seem to be relevant here either. I didn't remove content because the article was too big; I removed content because this is an article about The Highway Code, and that text about an entirely different publication was not relevant. I don't think the idea behind that piece is to combine a bunch of articles on vaguely related subjects into one mega-article, up to the limit of 40 kB. Anyway, I imagine there is ample material in the history of The Highway Code over the last 80+ years to develop this into quite a substantial article, without having to delegate it to being a sub-section of an entirely different article.
- Once you have found the material and written the article, come back to me. Until then, DO NOT THROW AWAY TEXT.
- Why don't you read the - Maltese Highway Code - a comparison of it and the British Highway Code would be highly instructive. BTW, both the British and the Maltese documents are called "The Highway Code". Martinvl (talk) 21:43, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
I figured it out, and have now fixed it. Dainful (talk) 21:12, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
