There's a panel at next week's San Diego Comic Con (Thurs 24 July). If there's a premier date announcement I feel we can move the draft to main space. Otherwise, it should at least generate some articles from the places that often cover CR news. Little pob (talk) 16:07, 16 July 2025 (UTC)

I think it depends on when the premiere date is. Like if it is this fall, then that probably makes sense because we're fairly sure it is certain to be released. But if it is like a year from now, I worry we run into a WP:CRYSTALBALL concern (essentially, the further out the release date it is, the higher chance of the show being pushed back or canceled). By premier date I meant something specific; example, September 26, 2026. I wouldn't call a broad "Fall 2026" or the nearer and narrower, yet still generic, "Christmas 2025" a premier date, but should have been clearer.

Cancellation at this point, with two seasons written and the VA done, would perhaps be notable in its own right—though not necessarily as a stand-alone article (unless there are article size concerns at a relevant CR or Amazon MGM Studios article). Little pob (talk) 17:30, 16 July 2025 (UTC)

That makes sense. I was thinking about Étoile (TV series) where Amazon ordered two seasons before it started, and then canceled the second season after the first aired. Amazon pulling the plug would be notable (in some article) & while I would be super surprised if they did it to M9, it isn't entirely out of left field for the studio to do something like that (thus CRYSTALBALL). The show's title was updated along with the recent announcements, so the page should be moved to The Mighty Nein accordingly. The Mighty Nein is currently a redirect to Critical Role campaign two, but the animated series would definitely be the primary topic over a redirect, and this page already has a disambiguation for that purpose. Plot summary

@TenTonParasol: Forgot to mention this yesterday but when resolving the edit conflict, I really struggled to merge our plot summaries without going over 200 words (I think my best attempt was still ~237). If we remove "of the Dwendalian Empire" & "of Civil Influence", that gets us 7 words back; I did add some Ikithon details to the setting section. Not sure how to reduce either the Beau and/or Caleb/Nott sentences if we want to add back in Volstrucker/Beacon details but anyone should feel free to take a stab at it. I'll have a go. For a 45 min premier episode that manages to pack a lot in, I've no issue ignoring the WP:TVPLOT guideline and going a little over 200 words – ideally still under 210, but 220 at most (a 10% increase seems reasonable). I've got a good revision, well under 200 words: "Three Volstruckers steal the Luxon Beacon, an arcane artifact from the Kryn Dynasty. A magical explosion during their escape destroys Rockguard Garrison. The Bright Queen threatens war with the Dwendalian Empire over the theft. Despite seemingly knowing nothing of the theft, King Bertrand and his council, including Archmage Trent Ikithon, prepare for war. Ikithon secretly meets with his Volstruckers, one of whom's soul gets consumed by the Beacon. When the Cobalt Soul is sent to investigate the garrison blast, monk trainee Beauregard Lionett discovers a magical crystal in the wreckage. After Archivist Zeenoth confiscates the crystal & benches her for insubordination, Beau follows him & discovers his colludion with a Volstrucker, Owelia. Owelia ambushes Beau, leaving her for dead. Expositor Dairon saves her, roping her into her investigation of the Beacon theft. Meanwhile, Caleb Widogast, a destitute former wizard, befriends Nott the Brave, an alcoholic goblin, after stealing spell components to summon Caleb's old cat. The pair decide to travel together. Molly's death in the campaign

@Erp Erpington: I've reverted your removal of the fact that Molly died in C2E26 from the cast section. To the best of my knowledge, because it is supported by the source, an edit summary spelling out the objection is warranted but none was provided.

No issue if the whole statement gets removed, but the information around Molly's death in the campaign provides context as to why Jaffe has reason to be grateful to explore his backstory in the animated series.Little pob (talk) 12:47, 8 January 2026 (UTC)

It just felt like an unnecessary spoiler to me. Not everyone watching the show follows the Critical Role web series, and it wasn't within a plot summary section or anything like that. Granted that spoilers are allowed without warnings and all, but I don't know if that detail really serves a necessary encyclopedic purpose. Is a particular justification for why Jaffe enjoyed fleshing out the character's backstory really required here? I think the statement stands reasonably well on its own without the plot detail/extra context. Full detailed context can be left to the cited article. I feel it's the weaker of the real-world statements and the removal of why Jaffe feels that way only weakens it further. That said, there is no guarantee those events will occur in the animated show... (His death in the campaign impacted M9 deeply – Beau especially – so I doubt the "event" will change from the source material, but the "when" and the circumstances could well alter.)

Perhaps there's a compromise to be had by rephrasing? Something like:

"In an interview with Paste, Jaffe expressed gratitude that the audience would get to see some of Molly's backstory in the animated series, as this was not possible in the original campaign"

Yeah, something like that. The original quote said "So having the time and the space to really hit those moments and put in all these things and let him breathe in a way that sometimes a game doesn’t allow was really just so rewarding." There's two minor details I'd tweak based on that quote: 'character development' instead of just 'backstory', and 'a game' rather than this specific campaign. Both of them are a bit broader in scope. How about this:

"In an interview with Paste, Jaffe expressed his pleasure in being able to develop Molly's character in the animated series beyond what was possible in the game."

I don't know why, but expressed his pleasure doesn't sit quite right here. It might be it's not as closer a synonym to "rewarding" as gratitude, but could also be me projecting Jaffe feeling bittersweet in getting to come back to Molly. I'm reading "sometimes a game doesn’t allow" in the context of the whole paragraph and that it is speaking to the finality of death for characters in a TTRPG campaign (in this instance a low level D&D game). I'm not sure develop Molly's character works either. Molly came across as a fully rounded character in the campaign but that's probably OR... Perhaps a blending, with additional copyedits to pick up the "time and space" part of the quote:

"In an interview with Paste, Jaffe expressed gratitude the slower pace of the animated series afforded "the time and space" to explore Molly's character and backstory beyond what was possible in the live play show."

Season 2 release speculation

@Skaizun: Not sure why you emailed me about your January 2026 edit instead of pinging on the talk page, but I'm responding here. You asked for that edit to be restored & stated: "You claimed it was a poor source, but, unless you can refute it, then it is legitimate until proven otherwise (n.b., there are plenty of fan sites that indicate the same thing).". SuperHeroHype does not list its staff, EIC or any editorial policies all of which are indicators of reliable sources. Additionally, the article you found says: "Currently, this is just a speculation due to the lack of an official release date.". This is not a good source to use. More importantly, we should not include speculation about future events (such as a season release date) per WP:CRYSTAL; see also MOS:TVUPCOMING for how upcoming details are usually formatted. The release date should only be included when it has been officially confirmed by reliable sources rather than just speculation (ie. fan sites aren't reliable sources).
