I subscribed to the News Leader when I was in Law School at the University of Richmond from 88 to 91. This was just before the internet and other on-line resources. For me, it provided the most up to date news because I often did not have time to read the morning paper and the News Leader was an afternoon paper. This allowed me to get the paper by the time I was ready to read it and it was substantially more current than the morning Richmond Times Dispatch. Other than the editorial page, it appeared to me that they were the same papers, with the News Leader being the afternoon edition. This is now just a piece of nostalgia. I am not aware of any afternoon papers now, but back then it was better to be holding that paper in the afternoon than the morning edition that was missing late sports scores, election results, and other news that broke late the day before or in the early morning. One notable difference was the editorial page. Both papers were conservative, but they had different editorials and there were some differences in endorsements. The editorial cartoons were also different and the News Leader had cartoons that were often picked up nationwide. It was a great paper and I miss it, but this is the way of things. I now have an iPad and get the current news as I want it and that is the way of things now
