All the properties were sold in a single day

edit

I am dubious of the statement: "All the properties were sold in a single day". Looking at a Hopkins plat book for the city of Miami in 1925 it seems to me that the Roads was platted in at least three phases. First there was Holleman Park done before 1914 (see http://www.grovebook.com/images/Miami1914c.jpg ), then Brickell Hammock, and then Brickell Estates. Beth Brickell's informant was probably speaking of Brickell Hammock, less than a third of the Roads area. It may have all sold out on Feb 1, 1923. This was not unusual, subdivisions often sold out in one day back then. People were crazy. But I don't think it was the entire Roads area.GroveGuy (talk) 10:03, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Beth Brickell's book might be clearer than the newspaper article, but if it is based on interviews (with what almost certainly have to be second-hand informants), it is likely to disagree on details with records from the period. We are not supposed to use primary, unpublished sources, but there may be something in an old newspaper article (which would probably require a in-person search in the Herald's morgue). An easier place to search would be back issues of the Tequesta, but no guarantee of finding anything. At least the old issues of Tequesta are on-line. In the meantime, I would support removing that statement until we can find a supporting source. -- Donald Albury 12:17, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the three subdivisions I mention above I found this interesting article in the Miami Daily Metropolis for "Holleman Park" on 17 March 1923:http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=D-EtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=UdgFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6286,48825&dq=holleman+park&hl=en and for "Brickell Hammock" on 10 February 1923: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=pgItAAAAIBAJ&sjid=SdgFAAAAIBAJ&pg=4049,3597171&dq=brickell+hammock&hl=en Note you are in a Google subdivision called News. Last, here's one for "Brickell Estates" from 19 September 1925: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=ZDIuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=G9cFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3057,5811325&dq=brickell+estates&hl=en Wow, you can do lots of research with this tool! Ah, nice! I didn't realize Google was doing that. That will really help with a lot of articles. -- Donald Albury 19:38, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
