Talk:The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson/Archives/2014

Vandalism

I just noticed that there was a whole line of 5s taking up a line of text. gonna remove it now. -mike

-UPDATE: i also found Jascha Heifetz link ruined, i repaired it.

Subsection instead of separate article?

This article seems well-written, but shouldn't it be a sub-section of either The Tonight Show or Johnny Carson? If we make an article devoted to Carson's version of the show, won't pages dedicated to the other three hosts also need to be created and maintained? Also, why isn't Jay Leno listed as one of the guest hosts? He hosted on Mondays toward the end of Johnny's time as host before being named as Johnny's successor. Isn't this significant?

At the very least, the article should be expanded--I smell a Request for Merger or Expansion coming. Telestylo 05:29, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

I offered some comments about this topic in Talk:The Tonight Show. As I reviewed the articles that linked to the combined version of The Tonight Show I was amazed by how many of them are Carson-specific. Those references illustrate another reason for having the separate article. There's plenty of precedent for it being separate as well, such as Late Night with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien being separate, and The Simpsons being separate from Matt Groening, to name two examples. 66.167.141.83 08:06, 1 October 2005 (UTC).

OK. I think Carson was so identified with "The Tonight Show" that he probably does need his own page. But, so do Steve Allen, Jack Paar (especially Paar), and Jay Leno, and eventually, Conan O'Brien. Also, the "Tonight Show" page itself will need to be reworked to be about the show more generally, with links to each of the pages about the individual hosts. Phew--more work to do! Still need to find out how many time Jay guest hosted before becoming host himself. Telestylo 19:48, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

"Full" list of guests?

The guest list is useful historically and much appreciated to be sure, but I can think of a couple of things wrong with it: first, it should probably be its own article unto itself, since the show spanned 30 years and included thousands of individual guests. Second: the list as it stands is not "full" and may never be because of the number of episodes which were lost, so for now, I'm just changing the name of the sub-section to "List of guests." But attention needs to be paid to this issue because the list, as good and well-researched as it is, has horribly enlengthened the article. Telestylo 07:05, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Moving the list out of the article ... as Telestylo points out, this list should be in a separate article. I'd also suggest it be organized by date so that the list is easier to verify. 66.167.138.24 08:14, 5 December 2005 (UTC).

The list is next to useless without dates of appearances, at least for the first appearance. Memory plays tricks. Maybe the guest appeared on Jack Paar, or Merve Griffin, or David Letterman. TV Guide is a guide to who was scheduled to appear, but there were many cancellations. 71.228.11.251 04:14, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

For many years, NBC kept Bob Newhart under contract specifically to replace Carson on short notice should Johnny retire abruptly. (Someone has pointed out that "guest host' is oxymornic.) WHPratt (talk) 14:05, 24 February 2009 (UTC)WHPratt

Suggestion about guest list below

This list of celebs is long enough to constitute a Wikipedia category: Tonight Show (SJC?) Guests. Is there a bot to alphabetize it in the meantime?

The image Image:Carnac the Magnificent.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

The following images also have this problem:

I fixed a typo at the beginning: "For all but a few months of its first ten years of existence..." It was only in NYC at it's inception. The original sentence is backwards. Regards Johndoeemail (talk) 04:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

The article was correct as it was. I've reverted. Lambertman (talk) 04:26, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

You're right, my bad. Johndoeemail (talk) 16:05, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

No Format section?

Edit request: could someone write a format section for this article? Most other shows seem to have one. DP76764 (Talk) 21:01, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Last Shows

I removed the last paragraph of the Last Shows section. It was about his life post-Tonight Show. This is something that belongs in the article about Johnny Carson himself, not in the article about the years that the Tonight Show was hosted by him. The rest of the section needs work, but what I removed should help it remain on topic. Mantisia (talk) 17:07, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Validity of Number of Episodes

I noticed the episode counter and reasoned that it seemed high. Verification of this episode count would be helpful.

Patrick McDougle (talk) 04:12, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

  • Not sure what number you saw. The number currently shown is 4531. 4531 divided by 30 is 151. If anything the number cited may be too low, especially if it includes guest hosts and Best of Carson editions if you consider the show ran 5 (at one point 6) nights a week for more than three decades. 68.146.80.110 (talk) 19:58, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
