Talk:The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya

Title?

Most sources I've seen translate it as "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya". Can somebody please look this up? Luigi6138 21:31, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

That would be a better translation, but the only official source anyone has found has it as Vanishment. It seems the feeling is that a bad/unnatural translation whipped up for some bookmarks is better than an unsourced translation that people disagree with. (Disappearance might not be terribly controversial, but some of the others would be.) Until the books actually come out here and get new titles, we may be stuck with these. I'm guessing that, in the end, the US localization team will translate it as "Disappearance," rather than "Vanishment," as disappearance is a much more common word than vanishment. On a slightly unrelated note, my Firefox spell-checker doesn't like "vanishment." Lunalis (talk) 20:37, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Since when is disappearance more common than vanishment? They mean the same thing, and it's presumptuous to assume that one is used more often than another without any grounds. And just because Firefox's spell checker isn't perfect does not mean that vanishment is not a word. I've checked five online dictionaries, and the word is so obscure not one of them even has an entry for it as anything but a footnote to vanish. As any native speaker could tell you. The word simply isn't used. Doceirias (talk) 01:25, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
