  •   Long, interesting article moved to article space yesterday. Everything is cited and sources look good; one is from 1878 but it's only used for minor details that are unlikely to be outdated, and I think the Instagram posts are OK per WP:SPS. Didn't find any copyright issues. The hook is short, interesting, cited in the article and confirmed with the online source. QPQ is done. I think all the pictures of the building would work well, and if you add one to the nomination I'll approve it, but it's your decision. Excellent work! Hi @Eddie891, thank you for all of your work on this article. It's very well-written and close to being good I think. I have a few minor comments in the table below. Do let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Unexpectedlydian♯4talk 22:30, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @Unexpectedlydian! I've just expanded the lede, so I think all your comments should be addressed. Eddie891 Talk Work 02:23, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct.

Lead

  • Should "third" be capitalised? I don't think so, but just checking.
  • No, because it was never really the 'official' name of the courthouse I think we would just use sentence capitalization
  • I don't think "United States" is needed in the first sentence.
  • Removed

Description

  • When first mentioning Shaw, include the full name and a brief description of who they are.
  • Done

History

  • Do you know Colonel Vorhees's full name? If so, would be good to include in the first mention.
  • "a dynamite cartridge inserted in each corner and then exploded." Move the period after the closed quotation mark.
  • Per WP:LQ, as the period exists in the original sentence (which I have just confirmed), it is correct as is in the article.
  • In 1964, The Post-Standard wrote that Syracuse was seeking offers from private interests for the courthouse and that it seemed "certain" the building would be "razed" if no other use was found for it within "six months". The quotations in this sentence are a bit excessive, I'd suggest rephrasing to either include a single longer quotation, or paraphrase the quote.
  • Agreed, rephrased a bit
  • and was completed by the 22 Should this be "the 22nd"?
  • yes
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.

Lead sections

  • The lead is a bit short. Perhaps add more detail about the planning and construction of the building.

Layout

  •  Y

Words to watch

  • None identified.

Fitcion

  • N/A

List incorporation

  • N/A

2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
  • Citations and sources are in the appropriate places.

2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose).
  • Sources all look reliable in the context of this article. I note that the link to Instagram (which I wouldn't generally consider reliable) is just to confirm a date, which I will accept.

Source check

I have selected 6 sources to check, and will check more if I find issues.

Hardin, Evamaria (1988)

  •  Y

"The Third Onondaga County Courthouse". Syracuse Then and Now.

  • fourth Onondaga County Courthouse on Columbus Circle In the source, "Fourth" is capitalised.
  • yes, but as we don't capitalize third in the article, I think the same is true for fourth here. Sources are a bit inconsistent, and it isn't technically part of the building's name, I just use it here to clarify from the Third. When I create the building on the fourth courthouse, for instance, it will be located at Onondaga County Courthouse.
  • Can't find where in the source it says that the building was named "Syracuse Newspapers Building".
  • It's in Hardin, added

Shaw, Diane (2020)

  • In 1829, as the economic center of the county changed with the growth of a salt industry, the court was moved to a new building in the middle of Salina... The source on p.49 says this took place in 1827, not 1829.
  • Shaw says the decision to move the courthouse was made in 1827 but talks a little about the disagreements over where to actually construct it. hardin makes it a bit clearer that the courthouse was moved in 1830 (1829 was when the old courthouse was closed so it's not entirely accurate to say the switch happened that year, but I think that's where the confusion originated), so I've clarified.

Mariani, John (February 9, 2007)

Huxtable, Ada Louise (March 15, 1964)

  •  Y

Clayton, W Woodford (1878)

2c. it contains no original research.
  • Statements in the article are appropriately backed up with citations throughout. Happy from conducting spot-checks that there is no evidence of OR.

2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism.
  • Happy from spot-checks that there is no plagiarism.
  • Copyvio detector also brings up nothing of concern.

3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
  • I am happy that this article covers the main aspects of the topic - design, history, construction, and legacy.

3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).
  • I am content that it stays on topic. The discussion about previous buildings is brief, comprehensive, and necessary.

  4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
  • Article is presented neutrally.

  5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
  • Majority of recent edits are by nominator and/or constructive.

6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content.
  • Images are tagged with PD copyright status.

6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.
  • The pictures are of the courthouse and relevant to the topic. Not sure why there's two of the courthouse in 1960 - maybe one would suffice?
  • No problem, let's keep as is.
  7. Overall assessment.

Notes

edit
  • Nelson was influenced by a remodel of the nearby Rochester's Monroe County Courthouse, originally constructed in the Federal style in 1822 before being remodeled into a more modern style. -> need to revise, what is "Modern" in this context?
  • "Additionally, the library had grown so large that it cracked the walls of the annex." What is the annex here?
  • What is Ronao corp?

Post-PR comments

edit

Here are a few comments I meant to post at the PR but never did.

  • Periods should be removed from some of the captions per WP:CAPFRAG.
  • Lead, para 3: Despite proposals to repurpose the building in various ways, including in the book Architecture Worth Saving in Onondaga County - I would say "including one in the book", because otherwise "including in the book" refers grammatically to "in various ways" (i.e. it sounds like one of the ways the building is being repurposed is in the book).
  • Description, para 1: A tower was attached to the left side - Which direction did the building face?
  • Description, para 2: 52 by 72 feet (16 by 22 m) - This should be singular.
  • I noticed that some quotations, e.g. "asymmetrical massing and detached form," have the comma/period inside the quotation marks even if they are not full sentences. Per MOS:LQ, for these types of quotes, the punctuation should be outside the quotation marks.

More in a bit. – Epicgenius (talk) 16:03, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
