A puzzling reference
editThis is from an 1817 publication. The date of birth is given as 1810 by at least one obituary; but as 1809 in Venn. If that is the same Thomas Gaskin of Penrith, at Mr Jaques's School, then he was at most 8 years old at the time. Which would be young to be solving the problems, if not impossibly so.
