Notability

edit

Brylawski is notable under WP:NPROF criteria C1. He is highly cited in a low-citation field; C1 is further supported by the memorial conference and memorial journal issue.

Assault case

edit

A recent IP editor added to the article that Brylawski was charged in 1995 with assault on his girlfriend at the time, sourced to a contemporaneous issue of the Chapel Hill campus newspaper [1]. I wasn't able to find any other coverage of the case, nor evidence of conviction or university disciplinary action. If this were a WP:BLP, then we would need to remove this information with speed; for a biography of a non-living person, I still think it is probably WP:UNDUE without stronger sourcing or probably a conviction/similar. Pinging for a second opinion @David Eppstein: who has greater experience with math biographies than I, and who may have better Google-fu than I for finding sources; also @Mvitulli: who has shown interest both in math biographies and in professional situations where men behave badly. Agree, without resolution of the case, wider coverage, or reliable sourcing that this actually affected his career this appears undue. I think that because it is not a BLP it does not need revision-deletion. —David Eppstein (talk) 16:42, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Chapel Hill has a long history of cover-ups of these cases: https://www.msnbc.com/melissa-harris-perry/rape-isnt-football-game-unc-surv-msna20203 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:5C4:C400:4A0:65A0:BB2C:DF36:D603 (talk) 19:41, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I undid the revision. I think the final determination should be made by groups outside of the academic field and without connections in math (i.e. potential colleagues). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:5C4:C400:4A0:65A0:BB2C:DF36:D603 (talk) 20:38, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia has a long history of not including criminal accusations against people who have not actually been convicted of a crime, when the accusations themselves are not a significantly higher-profile story than this one. See WP:BLPCRIME. The only reason we are having a discussion rather than immediately determining that you are in serious violation of Wikipedia's policies is that Brylawski is not still living. Call it a cover-up if you wish but demanding that only the ignorant participate in such decisions is also not how Wikipedia works. —David Eppstein (talk) 22:22, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
