Most of this article was a copyright violation

edit

Most of this article was a copyright violation from The Columbia Encyclopedia, available online at [1] and various other places. I have deleted the offending sections. DopefishJustin (・∀・) 07:22, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Where are the fundamental sources? IMHO we should delete it. Jack 20:22, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Freydís?

edit

Karlsefni spent some time on the North American continent. So did Freydís Eiríksdóttir. But were they on the same trip, as this article appears to state? --Hordaland (talk) 14:11, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Title of This Article

edit

A question has been raised, at the village pump, about the title of this article. Shouldn't the actual title of this article be the usual English spelling of his name, Thorfinn Karlsefni, with the runic form of his name as a redirect, rather than the other way around? See WP:MOS and Wikipedia:Article titles#English-language titles. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:02, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

See Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (use English)#RfC: Use of characters from the Icelandic alphabet (and please let's avoid the red herrings; this is not a "runic form"; it's the Latin alphabet of the modern Icelandic language. rFut.Perf. 20:08, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
To me, it's obvious that WP:Recognizability is the determining factor here. It also seems to me that some (cooperating?) special interest editors promoting (often inaccurately) a near-fantasy version of "Old Norse" have pushed non-recongizable lettering and terminology into EnWP in a way that is practically disruptive and flies in the face of WP:Common sense and WP:MOS re: "Do not introduce new and specialized words simply to teach them to the reader when more common alternatives will do." Perhaps a more thorough investigation needs to be undertaken to survey the damage? I think it has become considerable. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 07:54, 11 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Þorfinnr "Karlsefni" ÞórðarsonThorfinn Karlsefni – The actual title of this article should be the usual English spelling of his name, Thorfinn Karlsefni, with the runic form of his name as a redirect, rather than the other way around. See WP:MOS and Wikipedia:Article titles#English-language titles - also see consensus in previous section. SergeWoodzing (talk) 09:49, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Support WP:UE this person has an English-language variant, so should use it. Further, this uses non-Latin characters which are not English, so is not from the Roman alphabet. This title discriminates against English-speaking people, so is antithetical to the expected userbase of English Wikipedia (people whose only expected competency is English) -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 11:19, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • More Project guidance please - just at the moment, would like to see some clarification of how other Iceland bios around the year 1010 AD are handled. We use the Þ for football players, so would like some guidance / assistance on WP:CONSISTENCY from WikiProject Iceland In ictu oculi (talk) 15:51, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per 70.51.44.60. Note also the section above where there is a clear consensus to rename. Jenks24 (talk) 09:13, 9 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Þorfinnr "Karlsefni" Þórðarson is not actually the "runic form" as Robert McClenon and SergeWoodzing have stated.
It is also incorrect to say the name uses "non-Latin characters which are not English" (as per 70.51.44.60).
The letters "Þ" (thorn) and "ð (eth)" are both part of the Icelandic alphabet and the Old English Latin alphabet.--Kiyoweap (talk) 10:41, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Date of Death and other dates

edit

I can't find a source online saying we know how Thorfinn died, much less when. We are unsure about just about everything regarding the dates of Vinland Saga. How do we know he died in 1007? The Columbia Encyclopedia says he set out for Vinland in 1010. https://www.encyclopedia.com/people/history/scandinavian-history-biographies/thorfinn-karlsefni The Canadian Encyclopedia suggests he was married to Gudrid at about 1010, too. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/karlsefni 2600:1700:3310:7870:F977:897F:E1D2:C3E1 (talk) 01:38, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
