edit

We are having a peer review for remote administration tool Back Orifice. We're hoping that you could join the discussion and give us some ideas, how to improve the article further. --Easyas12c 19:54, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merge

edit

Anyone for the merge? --evrik 19:01, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the merge would be a mistake. Timbuktu is a software product. Netopia is the developer. Both deserve separate entries. Logically, it makes no sense to place software products in the same entry as their developers -- Imagine how long the Microsoft entry would be if this was done! --msilverman

Instead of merging the articles, I think the Netopia entry should be fleshed out (adding background information such as the company's founding, other products, etc.) Zukin 21:32, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

removed untrue statement about only commerical remote client & server

edit

Article claimed that Timbuktu is the only commercial remote software with both client and server, mentioning that VNC is open source. Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol fits this description, though it is bundled with the OS. As does Apple Remote Desktop, and Fog Creek's Copilot, though both rely on VNC.

Not sure the statement does much except blow sunshine over Timbuktu, so I thought deletion was better than lengthy clarification/caveats.

Josh, your statements are not entirely accurate. Microsoft's RDC doesn't have a Mac host (or server in VNC-speak) version; and Apple's Remote Desktop doesn't have a Windows admin console (or client in VNC-speak).

Pointing out that Timbuktu is the only non-VNC product that have both the client and server fully cross-platform is accurate and is not "blowing sunshine" anywhere.

I am going to restore my original wording, slightly edited.

Msilverman, maybe you should consider removing the statement again as it is definitively no longer true.

Major rewrite?

edit

I'm considering a major rewrite of this article with the express aim of increasing it's encyclopedic content and framing the current content in a more neutral tone. So far my thoughts are to have:

Brief introductory paragraph Table of Contents Development History (particularly what companies and the emergence of support for multiple platforms) Notable Features (will highlight "differentiators" and link to the remote desktop comparison chart as well) Released Versions (will include major features added/removed) References in Media (such as articles where the product was used in unusual ways or to solve unusual problems)

I do not intend to provide a feature-by-feature breakdown, as that could easily devolve into a marketing-like activity, which is NOT encyclopedic.

Anyone have any thoughts? Michael.b.price (talk) 18:17, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
