Compumix/"cannot be remixed"
editTime Fades Away was recorded directly from the soundboard to final 2-track masters using the Quad-8 CompuMix, the unreliable first digital mixing soundboard—against the wishes of producer David Briggs, who referred to it as the "Compufuck" but was forced to yield to the desires of Young. This resulted in a murky-sounding release; because the final mixes were those rough cuts, the album cannot be remixed for improved clarity:
"There were no 2 track masters ever made of this record. The master discs were cut directly from the 16 track masters through the Compumix system. A mix was recorded to a second 16 track machine--we had 2 that would run perfectly together--to feed the variable pitch system of the lathe--but was discarded when we were through. I was the mastering engineer who cut the masters". -Phil Brown
There is a contradiction between these two paragraphs. The first suggests that the live mix was recorded directly to two track tape, thus preventing the possibility of any mix other than the one made on the night from ever being made. Which would be fine if true, but the second paragraph contradicts this, saying that the disc was cut from "16-track masters" with no interstitial two-track stage. Therefore rather than supporting the first paragraph's assertion that "the album cannot be remixed", it instead suggests that indeed multi-track masters do exist.
If I read correctly, the issue is not that the album cannot be remixed, but that it cannot be remastered, as there was no stereo master created; thus the only existing copies of the mix that they created in 1973 is on the original vinyl LPs - there's no tape they can go back to for remastering except the original multitracks (if they exist). The second (quoted) paragraph appears to be a true statement of facts; the first paragraph represents a misunderstanding of the implications of those facts.
I'm not sure why you think that. First, the only 2 track mixes that existed when I cut it were file copies for Warners and the 2 track mix on the 16 track we used for preview.Second, the 16 track was literally worn out because they had to make so many passes due to the Compumix screwing up, both in "mixing" done at Neil's and mastering at CBS. Thus the not so great sound. Also, because Briggs used our chambers and EQ and, well, everything because the Compumix only handled levels, an exact remix couldn't be done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:3A29:88D0:B02D:6810:C9C4:F13B (talk) 02:17, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
here we go again
editDo we really need a million pop culture references and lists of crappy bands that play this album's songs? Like, where does this end on here? Get rid of it. I dont care if some lame jam band plays "LA" some night in Cleveland. I don't care and it does nothing to the article. Wikipedia is a joke. Smoakgetsyouhigh 02:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
