Dr O'Regan

edit

would just like it to be acknowledged that he is Dr Sir Tipene O'Regan. also this should be of more importance and would like to see greater depth on him if anyone is keen to write. he is a very important figure in New Zealand, particularly Maori History.

kia ora.

Can someone explain why he changed his name from Stephen to Tipene? 120.20.2.164 (talk) 10:44, 27 June 2011 (UTC)MeReply

Because this is clearly such a monumentally significant incident that might cause the world to end any day soon, I'll respond by hazarding the guess that Tipene is the Māori spelling for Stephen. Funny thing that. There, how's that for co-operation from a fellow wikipedian? Can you reciprocate? Is it more momentous than the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's changing their name to Windsor? What's Maori for O'Regan then? I comment because I find it interesting and perhaps a little disingenuous for politicians/public figures to be changing their names to court their constituents. I believe it is worth noting that Pita/Peter Sharples, Hone Harawera/Hatfield have also done this. Sure if they changed their names in youth is one thing but if they did it as an adult I think people should question their motives. Same as LA Mayor changing his name to Antonio Villaraigosa from Antonio Villar Jr to court the Hispanic vote. No doubt that is why the Coburgs did it120.20.2.164 (talk) 10:16, 28 June 2011 (UTC) meReply

It would be "hazardous" to guess that Tipene is the Maori equivalent of Stephen. It is not, and even if it was, that does not explain why he changed his name. The real reason is that he probably didn't want anyone to connect "Tipene O'Regan" with the "Stephen O'Regan" who failed School Certificate twice. Or perhaps he felt that in order to lead Maori claims for loot from the Government he needed to pretend to be a Maori himself. Personally I don't think that 1/16th actually counts as Maori.Royalcourtier (talk) 01:03, 14 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Kia ora Toni, the list of relatives in the infobox is not meant for any family member. Only those who have their own Wikipedia article are supposed to be included there. Schwede66 18:49, 20 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
