Explanation of "drive-by tags"
edit- Factual400, who has edited this article has a declared conflict of interest (although that declaration is not sufficient to comply with Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#Declaring an interest or the Terms of Use)
- The article is clearly written as an advertisement with tons of fluffy peacockery. "NZAS produces the world’s best quality aluminium" sounds like something out of Borat's version of the Kazakhstan National Anthem.
- The article clearly needs additional citations for verification of claims such as said aluminium quality, "supported the Southland economy for more than 40 years" (to what extent?), percentage of production exported, the economic benefit to the New Zealand economy (preferably an independent source rather than the owner's own claims), and so on.
Substantial rewrite
editHi there,
Given the multiple issues that were marked on this article over 18 months ago, I have had a go at rewriting this article. Main changes include:
- Adding significant sources. All claims are either supported by independent reporting, noted as coming from the company, or removed. Te Ara has an article on aluminium production in NZ that proved very useful. Broken links removed.
- Restructuring. Reduced duplication of information by making clearer sections. Added a history section with material from the Manapouri Power Station article and Te Ara.
- More detail on economic effects and closure threats (though it probably needs more) and the 2013 $30m payment.
- More links to other articles. Map of location and coordinate data.
It's a substantial rewrite so I welcome feedback.

- Well done! That's quite an improvement indeed. I removed the problem tags (which I had added). —LX (talk, contribs) 17:33, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
Merger proposal
editWith Tiwai Point back in the news I revisited this article and the article on the company that owns it, and I propose that New Zealand Aluminium Smelters be merged into this article.
NZAS exists only to run Tiwai Point. I don't think NZAS is notable separate to Tiwai Point. Its article has substantial overlap, with the only material not in the Tiwai Point article being a proposed sale of Tiwai Point in 2011. The NZAS page has also had unresolved issues marked against it since 2015. And if only one article were to be kept, it would be this one, not NZAS, as it is more known publicly and predates NZAS.
If people agree I would ensure all material from New Zealand Aluminium Smelters is moved or incorporated into Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter, then replace the text of New Zealand Aluminium Smelters with a redirect. HenryCrun15 (talk) 22:05, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- I agree. There is insufficient justification for two separate articles, and merging is appropriate. Marshelec (talk) 09:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- Agreed, Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter is the only aluminium smelter in New Zealand and as already stated NZAS only exists to run Tiwai Point. Cairo2k18 (talk) 03:59, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
