Formosa?

edit

"Sometimes Batak people accept those of traditional Formosa (Taiwan)."

The meaning of the above passage is unclear, at least to me.

Is there any reason to use the obsolete colonial name "Formosa" at all instead of the current name "Taiwan"? --2003:C0:8F30:5600:F899:5C4F:D7D1:17A6 (talk) 06:36, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Language improvements necessary

edit

Much of this article seems to be based on a translation by a non-native speaker of English, or possibly on a computer translation. I did my best just now to make a few improvements, but more is necessary. (I am not a native speaker either.)

Some parts I simply don't understand, so I can't correct them, like this sentence:

"While the role of men is central in the Toba Batak society, the role of women is very crucial with the existence of the Toba Batak concept of ‘Hula hula‘ where women and their families hold a higher ground in familial relations."

This sentence doesn't convey any meaning to me except a bit patronizingly saying "the role of men is central, but look here, women are in some way important too". --2003:C0:8F30:5600:F899:5C4F:D7D1:17A6 (talk) 06:53, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The "odd number of steps" I also don't get. Do house builders voluntarily identify as being "offspring of slave"? --2003:C0:8F30:5600:F899:5C4F:D7D1:17A6 (talk) 07:02, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sources?

edit

The section on origins and migration is completely unsourced and seems to be based more on local folklore than on scientific studies. The idea of a common ancestor for instance is very typical for legends of origin. If this article claims that

"all those six clans are actually descendants of Guru Mangaloksa, one of Raja Hasibuan's sons from Toba region"

as a fact, we need scientific evidence for this claim and not just folklore.

On a side note, folklore should be sourced too. --2003:C0:8F30:5600:F899:5C4F:D7D1:17A6 (talk) 06:53, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
