To Do

edit

To Do: things I'd love to see

1. History of warning signs-in Brazil dont they show pictures of swollen up arteries or something? 2. Translation for foreign ones - I have friends from all over Europe who smoke-I'll be adding some Russian, Czech, German, French and Brazilian ones in soon 3. No deletion of this. It starts out small, but it'll get bigger 4. Move somewhere else maybe, add some categories to it —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thewayforward (talkcontribs) 13:04, 2 December 2004 (UTC)Reply

for some photos see http://www.xelca.nl/articles/foto_op_pakje_sigaretten.aspx —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.51.209.230 (talkcontribs) 14:31, 18 December 2004 (UTC)Reply
Personally, I'd love to see information on the effectiveness of the campaign, preferably by nation.Wzrd1 (talk) 21:35, 17 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
so would I. I'd like to know how much the incidences of cancer, among smokers, are increasing or decreasing since the launch of the warning labels/photos. Has any research addressed the effects of how the human body may be affected by the power of suggestion, subliminal messaging, etc., in a negative manner-ie: visualization becoming realized.Ibelieveineverything (talk) 01:10, 2 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sections

edit

Currently it has sections called English French German etc, I added the Irish section as "Republic of Ireland" even though the messages are presented in English. It would probably be more accurate to point to the country or jurisdiction in which the messages appear rather than the language. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.202.138.134 (talkcontribs) 01:32, 4 December 2004 (UTC)Reply

As a european, to be accurate, this article MUST put all E.U. countries in the same section because their warnings are exactly the same, the only difference are language subtleties. Laguna117 01:06, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Laguna 117Reply

Spoofs

edit

I've added information about spoof cigarette warnings but didn't want to link directly to the website that seels them. Should a link be given? It's www.fakefags.co.uk if so. Dafyddyoung 22:21, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Canada

edit

I don't smoke, so i really can't contribute. However, I live in Canada, and I know that on our cig cartons, there are big gruesome pictures taking up like half of the cover thing. I know that they have one of people with mouth cancer, black lungs, etc, but im not sure. someone else who reads this might know. SECProto 23:45, Feb 27, 2005 (UTC)

http://www.infotobacco.com is the Canadian site. Brazil and Thailand's Graphic Warnings can be viewed here, and the full list (with examples) of countries displaying graphic images are here. hth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.134.6.202 (talkcontribs) 11:40, 14 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
the picture for the canadian warning isn't very convincing, erections are annoying, australia has the most graphic pics i've ever seen —Preceding unsigned comment added by The Right Honourable (talkcontribs) 10:58, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Canada has a new law where the anti-smoking graphic must be 75% of the packaging. Also they have banned "light" and "mild". The cigarette companies call them "smooth" and "balanced". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.175.61 (talk) 15:51, 4 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Naming

edit

I'd like to suggest moving this article to Tobacco packet warning signs or Tobacco packaging warning signs (I prefer the latter). The reasoning is that such warnings don't just appear on cigarette packets, but also on tobacco pouches. violet/riga (t) 20:18, 31 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Australia

edit

Can someone update the Australia section with this - http://www.smoke-free.ca/warnings/Australia-warnings.htm - I've never edited a page and wouldn't know what to do —Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.27.221.8 (talkcontribs) 02:21, 12 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Spain

edit

One particularly interesting warning on tobacco in Spain was "Fumar Te Matara" (Smoking will kill you). If anyone can compile a list, that would be great! --Trafficone 11:37, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually in Spain it's "Fumar puede matar" Smoking can kill, and it's a exception to the E.U. standard playing on language subtleties Laguna117 01:09, 25 January 2007 (UTC) Laguna117Reply

European Union

edit

Warning signs in the countries of European Union are standartized by Union legislation. Therefore there is no sense to compile a separate list for every country of European Union - bacause all warnings are the same, in the official language of a respective country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.246.200.110 (talkcontribs) 16:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I read in the newspaper when the laws where changed in Iceland regarding health warnings that they where adopted from the EU leguslations because of the European Economic Area agreement. I also took the liberty to add the bulk of Icelandic warning messages and put the translations into ()'s. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Agustsmari (talkcontribs) 14:13, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The entire European Union section has been outdated for at least 7 years, as it does not include any of the images used on the combined warnings now. Mind the gap 1 21:46, 20 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Translate

edit

Can somebody please Tanslate the Italy, and Lativa section? offtopic: Compared to the other warning labels, the US one looks inferior by tryin to use "bog" words in stead if falt out sayin it "THROUGH FIRE, JUSTICE IS SERVED!" 06:42, 22 October 2006 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Angelofdeath275 (talkcontribs)

Singapore

edit

First, this is a member of wiki but im too lazy to log in anyway

The purpose of this post is that i wonder why Singapore is not featured here.Singapore is also a country that take a serious stance against smoking.Cig packs have graphic images and u can literally see anti-smoking(not no smoking) signs around downtown. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.186.9.5 (talkcontribs) 15:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

it is so bad for you, don't to it, it might kill you!!!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.21.12.30 (talk) 01:18, 17 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

South Africa

edit

Can someone add South Africa because there are no african countries listed. South Afica has warning messages on tabacco packaging. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.209.60.57 (talk) 20:34, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

penumbral lunar eclipse?

edit

Does the netherlands really warn that smoking 'could cause a penumbral lunar eclipse?' —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.233.202.2 (talk) 13:53, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

No they don't. I never saw it before and can't find anything about it on the Internet either.94.211.19.30 (talk) 17:50, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Length of Message

edit

Does anybody know of any study looking at the length of the warning message? I always think that "Smoking kills" works better than a lenghthy medical text and thus in a smaller font. Similarly, are bi- or trilingual messages less effective than monolingual ones? 213.143.18.23 (talk) 08:42, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

smoking in new york

edit

who gave the right to the mayor of nyc to raise prices on cigarrettes. was this because he need it to raise more money for the city or because he is reformed smoker like everybody else. and i thought that the goverment has to ask if they can implement the law instead of make it a rule. why dont you outlaw the vodka scotch and wine. and close down the bars and reastaurants that sell alchohol that cause liver cancer that just as dangerous as cigarettes and why they dont ban buses planes with monoxide. i dare anybody from this organization to debate with me anytime on their convenience and time if they dare — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.146.205.81 (talk) 03:27, 7 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Many sections of article out of date

edit

The stated regulations and guidelines for many countries are out of date. I found an excellent resource https://www.tobaccocontrollaws.org/ that outlines the current standards of every country that is party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (https://fctc.who.int/news-and-resources/publications/i/item/9241591013). You can search the website by country/jurisdiction to view the current tobacco legislation of that country and it also includes PDFs of the laws (many of them in English).

I strongly suggest utilizing this website to bring the article up to date. Saintlosermisery (talk) 18:43, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
