Mary Docherty - dead or alive?

edit

"Tommy later married Mary Brown and, as of 2008, they had been together for more than 30 years."

I think we can do better than that.

https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/13058636.time-to-ask-whats-up-doc/ Mary serves tea to journalist interviewing Tom, 2012.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/scotland/27629084 Tom and Mary still together, 30 May 2014.

When I spoke to Mary just before Christmas, she appeared to be very much alive and still living at the same address as Tom. But that's original research, and therefore useless.

Now, I cannot produce a reliable source that says, "Mary Docherty Still Alive," or "Tommy Doc Remains Undivorced." However, such is the couple's profile that it seems unlikely that a change in their relationship and circumstances would have entirely escaped public attention or mention in the media. I can't establish that they are not divorcing at this very moment, or that Doc (who is, after all, 90) has not passed away in his armchair this afternoon, but it seems reasonable (yes, I know this is Wikipedia) to deduce that there has been no reported change in their domestic arrangements. In much the same way that we don't require constant assurances that Saturn's rings haven't disappeared, we just assume that we'll hear about it if they do. Ooh. Getting warmer. "88-year-old Docherty feels some vindication that 40 years on, he and Mary are still together – happily married." https://www.lep.co.uk/sport/football/preston-north-end/big-interview-part-two-tommy-docherty-1-8457482  March, 2017.

Farewell, Tommy Doc.

Further to the above, I can now confirm that Thomas Henderson Docherty passed away at about midday on New Year's Eve 2020. Mary Docherty (née Roberts) survives him. I'm not sure that cause of death was "a long illness"; it was more a case of prolonged old age - he was 92.

As regards the lines: Docherty led United to the FA Cup final again in 1977, this time as underdogs against Liverpool. United won 2–1, denying Liverpool the chance to become the first English club to win a treble. Liverpool would win both the League and European Cup while United would instead became first English club to win a treble in 1999.

Shortly afterwards, news that Docherty was having an extramarital affair with the wife of a United physiotherapist, Laurie Brown, became public.

News of the affair didn't become public after Manchester United won their treble, in 1999, which is what this implies. And IIMSS this isn't the arena for what might be seen as irrelevant Manchester United - Liverpool oneupmanship. Hengistmate (talk) 14:30, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
