when/how often should one brush?
editbefore/after food? morning, night? does anyone have credible references? --ti 12:10, 28 May 2009 (UTC)The best time to brush is after eating your lunch or dinner
- A few years back I can still hear from radio that one has to brush each time after a meal, also brush before and after you sleep, that's 4-5 times a day. It gets me think how much bullshit is in there since I brush everyday. Since then, I brush only if I go out, definitely not everyday, I have been like this for 6 years now, no problem at all.
- Nevertheless, it definitely feels different if you don't brush for a day, as if there is something stick to the tooth, but these are effectively cleaned each time you brush the tooth. --14.198.220.253 (talk) 08:26, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
Brushing with soap
editThere's some stuff online about how brushing your teeth with anti-bacterial soap is the best way to get them clean, that toothpaste leaves a layer of glycerine that won't wash off, preventing remineralization, etc. Is any of this founded in reality?

Who/what/where etc
editThere are several rather major points made in this article which don't have any sources, especially this line:
"Poor dental health has been associated with heart disease and shortened life expectancy[citation needed]."
Since these are such big claims can they be removed until citation is given? Citation needed has been added but the message has been there a while. If they have a reason to be there then sources should be found.
Sources to health benefits missing
editArticle seems to be lacking sources when health benefits related to tooth brushing are discussed, especially for these claims:
"Modern medical research has shown[who?] that brushing teeth properly can prevent cavities, and periodontal, or gum disease, which causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss. If teeth are not brushed correctly and frequently, it could lead to the calcification of saliva minerals, forming tartar. "
For the sentence "Poor dental health has been associated with heart disease and shortened life expectancy. [1][2][3]" There are three sources, one of which has broken link, other which actually states that tooth brushing increases the risk of bacteremia, and third one of which talks about osteoporosis. Not really convincing.
I suggest adding sources to claims where they can be found, and removing claims where they cannot.
Move
editThis page should be moved to "toothbrushing" because "tooth brushing" is not a correct phrase to be used.--Ababcdc1 (talk) 01:54, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

History section needs some serious cleaning.
editCome on,people. That part about the Muslim world, whoever wrote that clearly has no experience with writing texts in wiki format and without biases. Needs to be formatted.--MightySaiyan (talk) 13:43, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
Dead Reference Links
editReferences 1 and 4 do not link to the mentioned articles. Replacement links need to be found, or the citations (and possibly the information from them) removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.164.44.143 (talk) 07:38, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
Health Benefits Heading
editShould the health benefits part of the article have its own heading?--Ericfood (talk) 16:53, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
Newer data on hardening of plaque?
editCan someone find newer research on how many hours it takes for plaque to harden to the point where toothbrushing cannot remove it? The article cites 48 hours based on research from 1969-73. I hope there's something more recent, but I haven't found it. Kim9988 (talk) 02:17, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Brushing methods
editOn 2021-10-15 @Graham87: deleted material which @Adatep: had added, citing the British Dental Journal https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tooth_brushing&diff=next&oldid=1049959671 It looks to me like an excellent source with relevant info about frequency of different recommendations. However that article does not describe the methods, such as Fones, so another source would be good too. Numbersinstitute (talk) 21:04, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Numbersinstitute: After re-examining the text, I've gone and put it back with some reformatting. While it's true that Wikipedia is not a how-to guide, the text is well-written enough for here, on closer examination. Graham87 03:55, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
