Old TRL Logo
editDoes anyone remember in the late 1990s, they had a contest on TRL where viewers could submit designs for a new TRL logo? I recall that the winning logo was a rotational ambigram, meaning that the if you looked at it upside down, it still said "TRL", because of the design of the letters. I can't seem to find a picture of this, but I wanted to add information on it to the article. Does anyone remember this or know where to find this? --DDG 21:09, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

How many votes per user per day?
editI registered at the MTV website so that I could vote on TRL for the new Young Jeezy video ("My Hood") - and I read that "only one vote counts" on the Thanks page after I voted. I understand that only registered MTV.com users can vote online for TRL, but how many videos do they get to vote for per day? I also requested a few other videos besides "My Hood"; I wonder if those votes will count. Thanks.

Disk countdown
editSince we have the TRL countdown here and the los 10 + pedidos, it's only fair that we put the Brasilian TRL in here as well. AKA Disk MTV...
they actually put the countdown on the website http://www4.mtv.terra.com.br/disk/ but they don't count the days or how many times it spent at #1, so I'll add it all as 1 today and I will update it regularly! you can check the countdown everyday on the website...

Criticism
editThere's a statement in this section that says that MTV promotes a certain type of music (mainstream pop and urban) on the countdown. It implies that the voter's votes do not matter. Is there proof that the voters have no say in the video selection? I doubt that TRL is biased. I think we should change this section. Do you all agree/disagree?
I can recall a website with a loyal group of followers who all voted for this one (not previous on TRL) video and got it on TRL for a day. If TRL were biased, it would surely not have had that video on the countdown. That's my interpretation. Of course, the Tom Green ordeal mentioned in the article proves the opposite. -Oatmeal batman 20:37, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Debut?
editThe 'career benefit' section has a lot of stuff I feel isn't neutral. What does it mean that artists 'made their debuts' on this show? what sort of debut? Britney Spears had never appeared on TV before this show? Had never played her music before this show? What debut are we talking about? And secondly, Saying that the show catapulted these artists into fame is biased unless the article can cite itself. Muchmusic played all of these artists videos. And Canadians don't get TRL. Nor do most people outside North America. So saying that TRL was the cause of the popularity seems to be a fact not in evidence. TheHYPO 04:33, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
- Music videos making their debut on MTV is a big deal. If MTV decides to debut the music videos during TRL, then the TRL debut = MTV debut. I see your point but since MTV is "top dog" in the on-TV-music industry, the info in the article is valid. Oatmeal batman 20:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't say the info was invalid, I said it was uncited and unclear. Nowhere does it say that music videos making MTV debuts do so on this show, so that is not made clear in the article. So 'debut' in the Benefit section is completely un-contextualized. But my question is, before TRL debuted videos, was the debut of artists on MTV or on the previous countdown show not a factor in an artists' success? Is TRL of any impact on these artists' fame, or is it simply that MTV debuts their videos on this show? I mean. Can you see any correlation between the DAY it debuts and the success of the artists? I don't deny that having their video played on MTV is a big hit for an artist, but does their success have anything to do with the fact that they debuted on TRL, or the simple fact that their video was shown on TRL at all? or the simple fact that they were shown on MTV at all? Has VH1 or anywhere else had any less impact? All I'm saying is, without citation, it's one person's opinion that these artists "debuting" on TRL has directly lead to their success. I can guarantee you other artists have debuted on TRL and gone on to serve burgers, so I don't think you can prove a correlation that way in saying that debut = success in every case, so I don't think you can therefore backtrack that success = thanks to debut. TheHYPO 03:31, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- True. If the article doesn't correctly cite correlating TRL debut and "success" (whatever that may mean), then the article should be changed. Vagueries should be kept to a minimum on wiki. -Oatmeal batman 17:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Recent top ten lists and live performances lists
editI don't think these are needed; they make the article look like a "current events" piece instead of a Wikipedia article, and need constant updating. It's probably not notable enough information for us to be including anyway, because lots of videos reach the TRL countdown and it changes every day, whereas the article for the far more notable Billboard Hot 100 (which is updated weekly) only mentions the current number-one. Extraordinary Machine 15:50, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, because there's been no response here, I've removed them. Extraordinary Machine 20:07, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
-I actually like the list. There's only 10 videos...but I understand the need to simplify things. Maybe you should just list the current #1 video, instead of the whole list? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.227.121.71 (talk • contribs) 20:15, 15 August 2006.
Please put back the list. It is actually useful. I'm from Asia and I don't know anything about TRL so with the chart I can know what's going on. It can also make the page more interesting. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aliff (talk • contribs) 10:33, 16 August 2006.

There's a few people demanding the lsit to come back. I'll put it back, if there's a problem let me know. For now, I'll put it back. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.44.16.135 (talk • contribs) 19:35, 16 August 2006.
- There's a website, http://www.absolutetrl.net/forums/, which is updated everyday, or another option is to just watch the live performances on somewhere like YouTube. Look, TRL is just one of many music video countdowns across the world, and it's unnecessary to list the entire countdown on a general purpose encyclopedia. If it changes everyday, then the information can't be all that relevant; Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of info. On an unrelated note, I do find it odd that three of the above users edited within minutes of each other. Extraordinary Machine 21:36, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not a native English-speaker, but I've helped in Wikipedia a few weeks ago. I don't think the recent top ten countdowns should be deleted, I mean there are just ten videos not 30 like the MuchMusic Countdown. The recent top ten countdowns have been updated since February and no one had said something wrong about that. I think the top ten countdowns should be updated every two days, for example: the U.S. countdown should be updated every tuesday and thursday (because it's on air monday-thursday, friday is just a count of the best of the week) and the Latin American countdown should be updated every two days (because is on air monday-friday) for example one week tuesday and thursday, and next week monday, wednesday and friday, next week tuesday and thursday... do you understand what I mean? Kraft. 23:18, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- They shouldn't be included. Wikipedia's an encyclopedia, not a blog, concerned with information that will be relevant in the long term. Anything that needs updating every two days (or even every week) just shouldn't be included. Start a blog instead if you want to keep track of that sort of thing, IMO. — ripley/talk 01:22, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- An alternative may be to supply milstone video's in trivia section like "X video has record for being on countdown for y weeks" or "X video has record for #1 spot at Y days/weeks". I agree that updated daily top 10 might be too much, especially when they are trying to get articles in Featured satatus (which implies very stable, little change to article) for release in Wikipedia:Version_0.5 and Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Nominations. Hackajar 10:03, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm responding as an outsider to the Request for comment on this issue. I don't really think that updating wikipedia every day, from now to infinity, with the TRL countdown is a reasonable solution, even if editors are offering to do it. If the list got out of date, which is totally possible, that would make this a laughable page. I also agree with Hackajar above that a stable article should be the ultimate goal. I think the best solution would be to find a static link that clearly directs the reader to the days countdown. I'm pretty sure this would work [1], though it might need some testing to see if it is, in fact, static. We could even break format a little and instead of putting the link at the bottom of the page, feature it more prominently in the text, since it's reasonable that someone reading the article would want to know todays countdown. Since MTV is already doing the work of updating it, why doublehandle it? Dina 12:58, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with this (or, alternatively, a link to absolutetrl.net). It means that readers will know where to find the info they're looking for, without it being on Wikipedia where it isn't suitable. Extraordinary Machine 16:05, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- I've removed the top 10 lists again, as per folks above (myself included). It's unmaintainable and outside of Wikipedia's purpose. — ripley\talk 22:22, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think the recent top ten countdowns should be deleted. I don't think anything was wrong with having the countdown up since it would always be updated when I got here. 16 October 2006
i want the recent top ten to be included in this article.
Top ten lists -- again
editFor the sake of clarity, let's re-open discussion here since there are a number of people still blindly re-inserting the top 10 lists. I'm of the opinion that these top ten lists are unmaintainable in the long-term. And even if someone were willing to tackle the task, it's outside the scope of the purpose of an encyclopedia meant to be a long-term source of stable information. I propose that as a compromise we link to a Web site where people can easily find the top 10 information, without having to maintain it here. Thoughts? — ripley\talk 17:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree wholeheartedly, for the reasons already explained above, but unfortunately at least one editor is choosing to revert rather than contribute to the discussion here. Extraordinary Machine 23:23, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- I really do hope that the anon editor(s) persistently restoring the video countdown discuss the issue here rather than continue to revert without explanation. Extraordinary Machine 20:32, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Let's add this external link to the "TRL top Ten" Yvil
Put it back please !
Do u know any sites that show the latest TRL chart? The link above has the chart but it is not updated.
- Well, I support having it in there. We're just going to irritate the readers by not having it in (as immediately above) and reduce our own usefulness. If it stops being maintained, then we can stop having it, but it seems senseless to me to remove it if people are willing to maintain it now. Everyking 06:11, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- daily top ten please...
- I want it on here. I agree completly with Everyking. Tcatron565 21:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Geez, why r they keep on deleting it? the top 10 list means so much to me, I live in southeast Asia, the bad thing is, TRL is 2 weeks late here, so, since the official site delete the top 10 list, I can't seem to find another source except wikipedia.. Please.. put it back..
There are websites that list archives of top 10 videos...why re-add it here? You haven't been searching the Internet hard enough. Try American Google instead of your localized Google--that might help. THE evil fluffyface (talk) 21:32, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
Cleanup Needed
editWhile cleaning up various other articles, I came upon this one and realized I couldn't fix it in a few minutes. There are many grammatical errors in this article, especially diction. I suggest that those of you who regularly contribute start a cleanup. The article is good; it just lacks a professional tone and proper english. --Iriseyes 18:37, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- case in point: "Younger Simpson had 3 videos in the # 1 and one close to retirement, Ashlee had a first # 1 video than her sister Jessica." -134.84.102.237 (talk) 04:17, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Trees?
edit"On 2 November 2006 it was announced that TRL will debut what is being billed as the first ever Hip-Hop public service announcement on global warming. The three-minute piece is titled "Trees" and is accompanied with a new track by Dr. Octagon aka Kool Keith. It warns about deforestation and the dangers of global warming and was created by New York-based production company Click 3X with director George Gerville. Gerville hopes that the piece will engage a broad audience on the subject of global warming, and serve as a positive call to action - a reminder that you can still make a difference. Producer One Watt Sun crafted the music, which blends live action with illustration and high tech CG animation. Lead animators on the project were Mark Szumski, Rob Cambell, Anthony Filipakis and illustrator Gabriel Tick and Steve Tozzi. They were inspired by the works popular director/animator Tim Burton and artist Kara Walker. The piece is unique because it "was in a constant state of evolution from the start" to convey a truly important message. "Trees" will debut during on MTV's TRL on 2 November 2006 at 4 pm EST."
-Okay, now does this really belong in the history, my feeling is the history should be pretty general and it is for half of it but the other half is this which either needs to be put somewhere else or get it's own page. Somebody needs to get some dirt on this show too because record companies have to be paying these guys to put their stuff on. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.233.167.166 (talk) 16:07, 7 December 2006 (UTC).
Music Videos/Format
editThe article is kind of misleading because it leads one to believe that they play the Top 10 most requested videos, but they actually only play about half of the videos that were requested and they just mention the others, then they don't play entire music videos anyway. Any video they play is only played for maybe 1 minute, 1 and a half at best. Also there needs to be mention of the general format with the hosts and guests and the fans talking during videos to tell why they requested it.--DavidFuzznut 10:24, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
Eminem
editI removed some information about Eminem in the others section because of inaccuracy. True, "My Name Is" was Eminem's mainstream debut, but it didn't spend a long time at #1. In fact, it never reached #1; its peak was at #3, and it retired at #6. "The Real Slim Shady" was the first rap video to reach #1 on TRL. Anthony Rupert 15:37, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Cancellation rumors
editSomeone keeps persistently adding the phrase, "There is no plans to cancel TRL as its MTV's most popular watched afternoon show and still brings in the ratings. MTV will not be cancelling TRL anytime soon."
What's up with that? They never provide any citation or source. --Samvscat 23:18, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
I just read an article that it was cancelled...Kay44 22:27, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Kay44
Daily top ten list -- once again
editAs previously discussed, this is an encyclopedia. As such, the goal here is to provide information that does not constantly change. If this were, say, an entire wiki site based on TRL, posting the daily top ten would make sense. But it's not.
Please see "What Wikipedia is not" for more information. If you want to see the latest daily top ten countdown, there is an external link in the article that points to the Popfusion website, which hosts all of the top ten lists. Samvscat 05:09, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
TRL Not Live?
editIf they prerecord Wednesdays and Thursdays shows then how do they pick the Top 10? Chris9086 06:03, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- Let me tell you that Total Request Live certainly never was total request videos, and now it is not live. I was very familiar with the show two years ago, and I was even in the audience a few days. They have typed cue cards; a clear sign that the countdown was either determined far in advance, embellished, or completely made up altogether. The voting system is incredibly easy to crack by any computer hobbyist, as did many fans. How do you think Madonna stayed at #1 so long in December 2005/January 2006? Luckily, they've fixed that and also got rid of the phone votes and put a cap of 1 vote per day per person (before, they used a point system where an online vote was 1 point and a phone vote was 50.)
But to answer the main point of your question, two out of the four shows of the week are live (or at least close to it) and two are taped. How do I know? You can tell by the lighting in the windows, the weather, and the news breaks. The taped shows can be identified as taped because they don't tape them at 1:00 when the show airs nationwide, they have to tape it at 2:00 (or later) after they air a live one at 1:00. Also, if it's raining on Thursday's show when in reality it is a cloudless day in New York City, for example, that should give you a clue. Also, since they tape the show earlier in the week, how will the newsbreaks stay current when they air at the end of the week? Those are filmed the day of, and the MTV news correspondent reports from the newsroom instead of the uptown studio as usual.
Hope that cleared some things up, and I hope I don't lose my job.
All this stuff about YouRL has little backing behind it and it seems like we're jumping to conclusions. Anyone else feel the same way? --Char645 23:06, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

No Doubt should be included?
editI feel as if the band No Doubt should be included in the article as they were definately part of the TRL universe. Anyone who watched the show throughout the 90's and early noughties, you would know what I mean. They were the first artist to perform in the new millennium. I want them to be included somewhere in the article, but I don't know where :S --Trevorrrj (talk) 10:28, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
