History and Etymology

There's some interesting history and etymology on the French page. Maybe someone could incorporate it here.92.24.154.37 (talk) 06:54, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Unfastened

edit

Currently the first sentence says: "A tote bag is a large, typically unfastened bag with parallel handles that emerge from the sides of its pouch." What does "unfastened" mean in this case? I know its usual meaning in English, but I don't know what is meant in this case. -- David Göthberg (talk) 17:13, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Davidgothberg, I tweaked the wording. In this context, I'm fairly certain unfastened meant without fasteners. Schazjmd (talk) 17:27, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Schazjmd: Okay, but what does "without fasteners" mean in this case? I mean, bags usually are not attached to something, right? (Note, I am not a native speaker but usually understand pretty much everything in English.) So at least for me, that is not a clearer sentence. --David Göthberg (talk) 17:32, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Davidgothberg, it means the bag doesn't have fasteners (zippers or buttons or magnets or hooks) to close the top. Schazjmd (talk) 17:35, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah thanks. Meanwhile I checked the dictionaries. And did a web search and an image search, only descriptions and images of tote bags came up. But the AI chats said what you said: "unfastened bag" means a bag where the zipper or other closing mechanism is open, or a bag that does not have a closing mechanism. And tote bags have no closing mechanism (they are "open bags"). Then I think "unfastened bag" sounds better than "without fasteners", since both expressions were equally confusing for me as a non-native speaker.
We perhaps should ad a sentence further down in the article explaining what "unfastened" means, or simply just have your explanation here at the talk page for those that get confused. (I don't know how common it is for regular readers to check the talk page if they get confused. I know most of my friends are not even aware of what a Wikipedia talk page is.)

Feel free to adjust the opening to whatever wording you think will be more understandable. Schazjmd (talk) 17:54, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
