Spectorsoft link inappropriate

SpectorSoft is a leading tracking software manufacturer and the external link on the bottom leads to a page advertising their products. This article needs to be rewritten Archer7 11:28, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Link removed, however, spy software and keystroke logger has external ad links, why can they do it? I am new to this and did not intentionaly mean to violate any Agreements, if i did, i am sorry.In addition, the link had more than just an advertisement on it, it actually further explained.... Question, if i were to link it to a web page that has not ads on it, only an in-depth article, would that be acceptable?

Why not make this the in-depth article? Make it unspecific (i.e. covering more than just your own brand) and also discuss the malware aspects; once there is a decent-sized article you might find that people will be more tolerant of an external link, provided that you can also link any other major suppliers of this kind of software. Some editors are more strongly opposed to "linkspam" than others. If i submit the articles verbatium, would they be considered as duplicate content from the search engines? Like i said, I really do not mind sharing and posting here, but I would not want to cause any issues with search engines for existing artices I have written. Also, I do not mind removing the link, but I would like to know why the terms spy software and keystroke loggers, have external ad links. I am not trying to find a way to make it go my way or anything, i just want to know why they are acceptable, nothing more.

I think the issue here will primarily be NPOV or not. If your papers include a POV (hard quite how to precisely define this in some cases) then they will be to that extent inappropriate for WP. As far as I know, WP has no policy on duplicate content re search engines. It does have a requirment that anything posted by GPL'd and therefore freely available for others. If your stuff is copyrighted, this will pose a problem unless you're willing to license the material under GPL.

I can imagine that the best approach might be a rewrite to evade the copyright (or perhaps POV) problem. Lots of that gets done here; it's a waste of time and resources, of course, but seems acceptable to those whose time is being expended (being self-selected volunteers), and as long as the hard drives in the servers survive, the hardware won't complain either.

I must point out one thing though, you mentioned malware, that was the primary reason I created this, because there is a huge misnomer that it is spyware, or malware, but it is nothing more than tracking software.

To my knowledge of Wikipedia policies, ad links are not acceptable anywhere. I'll check it out the other pages for you Archer7 12:52, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

I have now removed the ad link from 'spy software' (which was also a page advertising some SpectorSoft software), however I was unable to find any ad links in the 'keystroke logging' article.

It seems to me that computer surveillance is a wider topic than tracking software (eg, acoustic tracking of key strokes or CPU noises, EMI detection, etc in addition to installed software on a machine). But, tracking software is a sufficiently large topic (in the US, some large fraction of businesses (was 30% a couple of years ago, last estimate I heard is about 75% more recently) use such software to watch their employees; some law enforcement agencies -- in US and elsewhere -- use such software, ...), that it deserves more than just a section in the computer surveillance article. In fact, this article should be, I think, considerably expanded. I can contribute the tidbit (from New York magazine, in Dec ?92?) that Bloomberg News -- major financial data producer / distributor -- uses employee surveillance software to watch every keystroke produced. ww 15:28, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

"Tracking"

The title is actually wrong.

Tracking, like in Trace or Track, google for it, is about tracing the location, bij following the IP routing. Like with the software Visual Route. Mion 17:42, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Disagree. The term is used in this sense, however oddly according ot the dictionaries. There may be a better title, but a few minutes of thought turns up nothing that isn't even more awkward. We an live with this, I think. ww 17:27, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
