I’m not sure of the county training schools with entries should be listed here or in a separate list article. There appear to me to be many. Dozens at least. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:06, 21 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

The Russell Sage Foundation carried out a study of training schools for “delinquent girls” including some that served “colored girls”. This provides some context for the phraseology “training school” as well as broader philanthropic efforts at educational study and reform. Study here. Should the lost be organized by state? FloridaArmy (talk) 13:20, 26 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
I know some editors love tables which I find hard to maintain. Dates of opening and closing and name of succeeding institutions if any might be useful. Would the closing date be when the schools were renamed or when sicceeding institutions closed? FloridaArmy (talk) 13:44, 26 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I organized this list today by state because it wasn’t in any order and I needed it to be functional in order to add to the list. I noticed there were many duplicates (i.e., the same school but listed by county and by city) because it didn’t have order, which was also cleaned up. Adding facts like the dates of operation or successor schools doesn't make sense since this is a list and we want to keep it minimal; ideally that information would be in the article with RS citations included. I do think maintaining the city and state after the name makes sense, since there are some duplicate names. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 08:14, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Article name issue

edit

The name is currently "Training school (United States)" but it is a list of training school(s) in the U.S. and Canada, mostly by county. I suggest a more descriptive names of either "County training schools for Black students in North America", or "County training schools in North America". I see in the text of the article the term "County training school" is specifically for the Southern schools, so perhaps using instead, "Training schools in North America", "Training schools (North America)" or "Training schools for Black students in North America"? The training school in my town (southern Mississippi) was for juvenile delinquents, or for kids who's family life was so dysfunctional (drugs, etc), as to need to be removed from the home to an "on-campus" environment. It was like a secondary school and a boot camp all at once. Ditch 03:55, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am also seeing that some of the "special education" schools were also named as training schools. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 10:21, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
The name "training school" was rooted in the White supremacist views that Black people could only be trained, as could a pet or a stock animal, rather than educated. There should be numerous sources that will corroborate this. here is one. — Jacona (talk) 20:47, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Jacona Thanks for the source. The ShakyTruce source provided states the Oktibbeha County Training School (OCTS) for Black students started in the 1920s (as an example as the start of these training schools), however I think this list may have some earlier school start dates. Many of the special education training schools started in the 1840s–1890s, with some still active. None of this is concluding the first use of the name "Training School", we need to avoid WP:OR. I noticed this issue after reviewing List of institutions providing special education facilities, a lot of the institutions changed names over the years - and its possible it started with Black schools, and later was used for special education (and/or criminal/rehabilitation). I am not finding the source(s) that explicitly outline that naming history and/or relationship. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 21:21, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
