State Boundaries

Can anyone validate that Treasure Island is in New Jersy and Marshall Island in Pennsylvania? I always thought that the border was the mean river level on the New Jersy side, i.e. the river is entirely in Pennsylvania. Tim Keck 138.162.0.41 14:49, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Damage to camp

Treasure Island Boy Scout Camp Safely Evacuated

A community effort as two heroes emerge… (Pipersville, PA) June 28, 2006:

Treasure Island Boy Scout Camp, an actual island in the Delaware River, was evacuated due to flooding on Tuesday evening, just as the 2006 Summer Camping Season had begun. Scouting officials and local authorities who had been in contact and were monitoring the rising water levels made the joint decision to evacuate the camp to ensure everyone’s safety.

At 6:45 PM, the evacuation began and the island was completely vacated by 8:30 PM. Scouts were told to bring only their sleeping bags with them to expedite the process. Mark Berkery, Camp Ranger, and Brian Hoffman, Camp Program Director, piloted nearly two hundred people to safety in the surging Delaware waters, crossing the river for over fifteen trips each. The quick thinking and expertise of Berkery and Hoffman was instrumental in rescuing those involved from the threatening situation. The two men were the last across the river as they personally checked every campsite to guarantee that nobody was left stranded on the island.

Once on the main land, the local community displayed tremendous support for the displaced Scouts. School buses from Palisades School District transported the Scouts to the Delaware Valley Volunteer Fire house. There, they spent the night singing songs and telling stories of their adventures in the flood. This morning, the Scouts were fed breakfast and most have traveled back to their homes. Special thanks go to the Tinicum Township Police, Delaware Valley Fire Co., and the Point Pleasant Fire Co., who all worked seamlessly together to make a dangerous situation as safe as possible.

With the majority of the Boy Scout Campers safely home, the Cradle of Liberty Boy Scouts has offered its resources to the Red Cross Emergency Center recently stationed down the road from Treasure Island.

Scouts who were to attend camp at Treasure Island starting on July 2, 2006 for the week will be relocated to Resica Falls Boy Scout Camp in the Poconos.

In compliance with Scouting WikiProject policy on sub-council entities, I propose the merger of this article into the larger Cradle of Liberty Council article. Local articles really need to be council level rather than by camp or lodge, and we really are trying to avoid sub-council articles. Chris 02:21, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Marshall Island Bridge

I just returned from week one at TI, and as of now, a new bridge to Marshall is nearly complete, however, barge service from TI to Marshall is still required. Sam 19:23, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

• In April 2005, storms caused the highest flooding since 1955
• Among the important buildings on the island are the Kiwanis Lodge (handicraft), the Klein Lodge (nature), the Health Lodge, the Trading Post, and "City Hall", which is the main office in control of Treasure Island.
• Treasure Island has a swimming pool, which is scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt in 2006 or 2007.
• Every year, the Treasure Island camp staff create a different theme, on which the summer activities are based.
• Troops often take advantage of the camp's location in a river and near the Delaware Canal State Park.
• the archery and rifle Ranges were sited on Marshall Island because of state laws.
• Most of Marshall island is natural and uninhabited.

TI Closing

According to Cradle of Liberty's website Treasure Island is being closed. The Camping Committee decided that for "financial reasons" Treasure Island is going to be closed, effective Oct 1, 2008. Full Committee PDF report - Conchaga (talk) 05:43, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

RIP

History

It was originally privately owned by a Scoutmaster named Oscar G. Worman, who used it for his troop. Philadelphia Council leased the island from him for six years starting in 1913 and also held their first summer camp there in 1913. The council bought the island at the end of the lease in 1919. It was originally called Ridges Island. A council committee was inspecting the 50-acre island in 1913 when one member remarked that the scenic island truly was a "Treasure" and his comment was seized upon immediately as the name for the new camp. Treasure Island Scout Reservation is made up of two separate islands with the other being Marshall Island. What is interesting about this is that Treasure Island is part of New Jersey and Marshall Island is part of Pennsylvania. When they put up a suspension bridge to connect the two islands it was deemed an interstate bridge and required special permission.
