I spent some time with T.H. Lin at UCLA in the mid 1980's. The design and construction of the C-0101 was a heroic task, with the construction relying on scrap airplane parts, bamboo, and wood. The construction techniques derived largely from "traditional" Chinese scaffolding and temporary construction. Working conditions were ridiculously primitive.
