Cover songs

Rolling Stone nicked Dave for doing mostly covers as this entry does, but I think it's a trivial factoid. Why I it more relevant in Dave's case than in the cases of Sinatra and Billie Holiday, who feasted for decades on covers. Unless the artist is a noted songwriter doing an album of covers, I don't see why it has any relevance. (An example of that is Harry Nilsson's album of Randy Newman songs.) I'm seeing this as a "contractual obligation" album since it's his last for Swan Song; which would explain it being a compilation of mostly older recordings. I'd be interested to know which were recorded when, and where. (Not sure where the relevant studio logs would be found; maybe there are some details in interviews.) The 1968 recording that closes the LP, and the Stray Cats-backed track (Dave had recently produced their earlier UK sessions, themselves later compiled for the bulk of their US debut) are certainly interesting.
As for Dave being cited as more of an interpreter than a songwriter, nothing wrong with that. See also: Linda Ronstadt.
