Suggestions for improvements

edit

In the section on Etymology, the etymology of Astraka is uncertain, except that the root astra- is almost certainly Greek. I am not convinced it has anything to do with gutter. In the section on Geology, the term Mount Tymfi sounds odd. We either should be using Mount Tymphe, the established form in English translations e.g. of Strabo, or the mountain of Tymfi in Greeklish. Using Greeklish at all on the English version of Wikipedia sounds odd to begin with. In the section on Access, the villages of Zagori are mentioned as being the nearest settlements providing access. They are on the actual mountain. Most of these villages are at altitudes higher than most villages on the Alps or even higher than any mountains in Great Britain. Perhaps what was originally here was access to the upland plateau and the Dragon Lake, rather than to the mountain, and almost certainly the topic became confused during an edit. I think these are good suggestions on the whole. I'm gonna start looking into etymological sources for all of the listed names.
I'm not convinced Tymfi is any less correct to use over Tymphe, but I agree there needs to be standardization. While Tymphe appears to have historical president, Tymfi seems to be the official transliteration of the place name used by the modern Greek State. Tymfi is also the spelling used by major international websites like Google Maps. Given that this article is about the mountain generally and not focused on its place in a historical context I think I would lean towards using the modern transliteration throughout the article and only list the historic spelling at the top. Anyone have thoughts on that before I make the change? Skoulikomirmigotripa (talk) 22:49, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Follow up on Tymfi vs. Tymphe... Just did the old "google results check" and Tymphe has ~7,000 results while Tymfi has ~216,000. 2 orders of magnitude is a pretty compelling difference. I'm now firmly of the opinion that Tymphi should probably be the main name used. Skoulikomirmigotripa (talk) 22:54, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

As you can see here the following proposals were made after the 2nd assessment of the article:

To do list towards GA

edit

As you can see here the following proposals were made after the 2nd assessment of the article:

   * The introduction is a bit short and maybe should mention the significance of the area to the chamois deer population.
   * Overall the article is well cited for B class although the first paragraph of the Geography sections needs references
   * I would move the "Access" section higher up maybe after Etymology or Geography.
   * The Climbing and Ascent route sections should be combined, although you could probably make Climbing a sub-section of Ascent routes.

I have done the last two edits but the first two require more work. If anyone else working on the article sees this, please try to take into account the directions mentioned above and improve the relevant sections. Kkostagiannis (talk) 19:14, 2 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

== Review #2 == Having reviewed the article for the 2nd time, I can give it a B rating this time. A couple of suggestions to move this along towards GA:

  • The introduction is a bit short and maybe should mention the significance of the area to the chamois deer population.
  • Overall the article is well cited for B class although the first paragraph of the Geography sections needs references
  • I would move the "Access" section higher up maybe after Etymology or Geography.
  • The Climbing and Ascent route sections should be combined, although you could probably make Climbing a sub-section of Ascent routes.
