Costliest Philippine TC
editThe opening sentence reads "Typhoon Betty, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Aring was, at the time, the costliest typhoon to strike the Philippines". While appears to be true, the sourcing isn't as cut and dry as I would like. 1234 are my four sources, merely citing a list of damage totals from NDCC. Even though I think it's quite clear it is the costliest, and given how we mentioned how storms like Betsy, Agnes, and Andrew were the costliest Atlantic storms at the time, I think it's a reasonable inclusion (although due to hyperinflation common in the Philippines along with most counties in the world at the time, it's not as notable as it sounds). but the thing is, is the NDCC an adequate source? I find it largely correct for most damage totals for this country, but given it goes back only to 1970, there could be in theory be others more costly than Betty from the 1960's and 1950's, although there are no obvious candidates. Thoughts? @Hurricanehink, Cyclonebiskit, and Hurricanehink mobile: (pinging knowledgeable editors since Hink just did the same. YE Pacific Hurricane 05:32, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- Lets bear in mind that the NDCC (otherwise known as the NDRRMMC) is probably the best source for Philippine damages, however, i would like to see it sourced better.Jason Rees (talk) 09:32, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Yellow Evan: - According to Typhoon2000, Kate and Joan in 1970 were both costlier. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:16, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- Along with Rita 78. Most of the damage totals there seem to match or be slightly greater than NDCC, with the exception of those three. I generally trust NDCC more largely because their totals are derived from crop+property+private property although those three totals from Typhoon2000 seem to match up better with the level of impact those three storms caused. YE Pacific Hurricane 14:42, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- So there's your answer. Betty was not the costliest. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:07, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- Fair enough, removed the statement. I'll revisit those damage totals from Typhon2000 when I do Joan/Kate/Rita at some point. I just wanted to bring this up before I GAN this. YE Pacific Hurricane 23:18, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Lead
edit- "October 27, 1980": double space and a missing comma after 1980, per MOS:YEAR.
- The lead could be split into two paragraphs, since it's rather long.
- "Homes" vs "houses", need to choose one or the other
- I don't see the problem, given they have the same meaning.
- "11v provinces"
- That's what I get for adding non-breaking spaces last. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Who declared these provinces as a disaster area?
- I'll add this to the body. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
Meteorological history
edit- "upgraded [...] into": Should it be "to"?
- Sure, changed. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- "equal to low-end Category 2 status": "equivalent to a low-end Category 2 [storm]"
- Hurricane, since the SSHS isn't officially used in this basin. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- "(PAGASA) also monitored the storm" on November 1...is "began [monitoring]" missing here?
- Re-worded. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hurricane Hunter "fix": could a different term be used?
- Any time the inner core of a hurricane is penetrated, it is refereed to as a "fix", but since you asked, I'll change it. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Lots of repeated use of "Betty"; some substitutions would be welcome.
- Holy crap, I removed like three. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
Preparations and impact
edit- The first two sentences could be merged together.
- Is it known which airports were most affected by the Philippines Airline closure?
- "along low-lying suburbs": shouldn't it be "in"?
- "Even though" → "Although"
- "Although" might be the most overused word in human history, but ok. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- "30,000 [people left] homeless"?
- Inflation adjustments are needed for the figures listed in this section. Would prefer the local currency being used as well.
- In general, most members of the wikiproject have been opposed to including inflation. Although I don't exactly agree, I generally haven't been including them for six years (except for certain templates). YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Who provided the C-47 plane and relief goods?
- Who declared these provinces as a disaster area?
- 11 and 113 are better rendered as numerals, per WP:NUMNOTES.
- But then I'm starting a sentence with a number. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
