"On August 22, Thad accelerated northward, striking eastern Japan the next day just before weakening to its typhoon" - This doesn't make sense. How can could Thad have weakened to a typhoon (grammar error too, btw).
"As such, 1115,00 homeowners were without power during the height of the storm." - You should replace "As such" with something like "Additionally", because a house doesn't need to be demolished or flooded in order to lose electricity. Btw, the comma in the number is in the wrong place (should be 111,500).
"According to the JMA, Thad would maintain its peak wind speed until August 21, when Thad weakened slightly." - Don't use Thad twice in the same sentence. Maybe you should replace the first "Thad" with "the system"/"the cyclone"/"the storm".
