White House South Lawn

[edit]

Someone posted on my talk page about whether to write White House South Lawn or White House. I thought the south lawn was better but he referenced other pages that had only White House. I asked AI:

🏛️ Venue vs. Location on Wikipedia Venue typically refers to the specific physical space where the event occurs. Location is broader—often used for cities, regions, or general geographic context. In the case of South by South Lawn, Wikipedia lists: Venue: White House Location: White House South Lawn But if your UFC event is taking place specifically on the South Lawn, then “White House South Lawn” is the more accurate venue—especially since the White House complex includes multiple areas (East Room, Rose Garden, etc.). ✅ Recommended for UFC White House Event Venue: White House South Lawn Location: Washington, D.C., United States (if you choose to include a location field) This keeps it precise and consistent with how other events at the White House are documented. If you’re building an infobox and it doesn’t include a “location” field, just make sure the venue field reflects the exact site—White House South Lawn is ideal.

---

CoPilot said the above for me and I happen to agree that the White House South Lawn is better because the event is not happening inside the actual White House. The venue will be on the South Lawn across from the White house.

---

Update. I further discussed it with AI and it said:

"Exactly—it's not necessary to list "White House South Lawn" in the infobox venue field as long as the article body clearly states that the event took place on the South Lawn. Listing just "White House" in the venue field is consistent with how Wikipedia handles similar events, especially when the location is part of a larger, well-known complex. This approach keeps the infobox clean and recognizable, while the article text provides the specific detail for readers who want precision. It’s a common editorial practice that balances clarity with simplicity. If you're drafting or editing the article, you might say something like: "The event was held on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C."

That way, both casual readers and detail-oriented editors get what they need. Let me know if you'd like help formatting the infobox or writing the lead section."

- "White House" as the venue is fine, I think, as we mention the South Lawn.

Any thoughts? Marty2Hotty (talk) 07:03, 7 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Someone = me. Well, I'll put some of my previous thoughts here. I've been looking at other examples of events that were held in the White House, specifically the south lawn. I think we should keep "White House" as the venue (which is actually the case) and keep the specifications of the South Lawn within the article. See the South by South Lawn page for instance.
Therefore the main information (White House complex - which includes the main building's grounds) seems more accurate to keep at the venue section of both the main article and the List of UFC Events page. Within the event's article, we'll have the specifications at the first paragraph already that the event will take place at the south lawn. I've made some adjustments here. someone edited all the references and even put "South Lawn of the White House" in the main article. Marty2Hotty (talk) 14:41, 8 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Confusion with UFC 250?

[edit]

@Gsfelipe94

I don't see why a Template:Distinguish isn't warranted with UFC 250. They are both UFC events with the number "250" in their names. In fact, when you google up "UFC 250," you see first a link to this article rather than the Nunes event- wouldn't it make sense there would be visitors to both articles looking for each other in the future? HadesTTW (he/him  talk) 04:21, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

It does indeed link to this event instead of the other one. That's a fair point. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 02:40, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
No worries. To be fair, there is no confusion now considering how the official name was just announced a few days ago, but I'm sure some people will incorrectly refer to this event as "UFC 250" in the future. HadesTTW (he/him  talk) 02:42, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed and there's no harm in keeping the distinction there. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 02:43, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Poster

[edit]

What do you guys think about replacing the current poster from UFC's Twitter with the one on Tapology? Hm3n0n (talk) 17:44, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

There no poster for UFC Freedom 250 yet but the official poster will come closer to Event Date just like other UFC events. The picture is just a lineup. Placeholder must not be used. Its WP:TOOSOON UFCBonusExpertParamount (talk) 22:03, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The closest thing to the final event poster is the one that's updated right now (and that comes from someone who has been editing mma articles - and adding posters - for a long time). I disagree with the user above when it comes to saying there's no poster for it yet. That being said, the Tapology version is a photo of the Topuria/Gaethje matchup just like the UFC does for every event. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 02:42, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Can I recommend using a photo of the site being constructed on the South Lawn? The location of this event is what makes it special, and we'd highlight that instead of using a poster. https://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2026%2F0526%2Fr1664105_1024x576_16%2D9.jpg&w=1140&cquality=40&format=jpgItsRainingCatsAndDogsAndMen (talk) 23:30, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Number of title fights

[edit]

I don't know the best way to include this, so I'll put this here for review. One of the original claims introducing this event said "they’re going to have eight or nine championship fights, the biggest fights they’ve ever had. Every one is a championship fight, and every one is a legendary type of fight", so when this got reduced to just one title fight and one interim title fight, some media reaction was negative ("response from fans and fighters has been underwhelming"):

Also, the photo of the President is from 2017, shouldn't this page use a more recent photo given that the focus of the article is on 2026? Veewow (talk) 16:54, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not available to watch on CBS

[edit]

I'd like to recommend an update to how to watch. This event is not available to fight on CBS and is exclusively available to stream on Paramount+ in the US.

  • Update references that the event can be watched on CBS:
    • "with a limited number of preliminary bouts also broadcast on CBS."
    • "six or seven fights and be simulcast on CBS"
  • Why: The event will not be available to watch on CBS. This is inaccurate.
  • References:
    • Existing source states "UFC White House will not air on CBS" [1]
    • Official UFC cites Paramount+ only. [2]

Proposing UFC Freedom 250 Fight Card section to be changed

[edit]

I be using WP:CON to propose minor changes to the UFC FREEDOM 250 page to improve focus of the main topic of this event and limit reverting on certain changes.

The Plan

  • Moves Fight card planning with all its sub section under Origins and announcement section
  • Remove Alex Pereira photo from the page because event should be more focus on all 4 fighters which a new photo was edited in is enough (it will be moved under Fight card planning section) . The photo is blurry and i think copyright team need take second look of possible violation as previous UFC fighters pictures (crop from Youtube) been removed before for violations. No new photo needed. Governmentshutdown2026 (talk) 04:54, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposing to restoring Sean Strickland Controversy edit and President Theodore Roosevelt edits

[edit]

I be using WP:CON to propose minor changes to the UFC FREEDOM 250 that would restore "worth to mention in relation to the event" edits back to page and keeping it WP:NPOV. Prevent removal of certain topics.

  • Sean Strickland Controversy edit would be restored under same section as before with possible modifications to the edit. Past UFC Event page on Wikipedia provided some mentions of controversy on fighters who not fighting at the event at UFC 229 and UFC 306 (UFC 306 had less edit activity). diff
  • President Theodore Roosevelt Boxing Event at White House edits would be restored under same section as before with possible modifications to the edit. The UFC Freedom 250 Wikipedia page make it sound like UFC Freedom 250 event only combat sporting event that landed on the White House. This is more like history reliable edit that is needed. diff Governmentshutdown2026 (talk) 22:51, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Venue

[edit]

@Gsfelipe94: Can you explain why you removed reliably-sourced content that this is the first combat sport event at the White House since Teddy Roosevelt's boxing matches? The Roosevelt detail gives background to the event; this is not some random UFC card at the Apex, the main story is that the venue for the event is the White House so it's relevant to include detail on the White House as a venue. Also, detail that this is the third UFC event in Washington DC directly adjacent to it was not removed, so it does not make sense to remove one line about the venue as "trivia" but not remove the other line about the venue. NICHOLAS NEEDLEHAM (talk) 12:10, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Every event outside of Las Vegas has that information related to when it was the last time the UFC went to that location. About random, private practices of a previous president... that is trivia. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 00:54, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Whether other events have that content is a circular argument. If UFC articles are littered with trivia about "this is the 14th visit to [random location]", that's an argument to remove the trivia from those articles, not add it to others. You've given no reasoning as to why it's relevant if it's the third or fourth or fifth or whatever time a UFC card is held in Washington DC. Maybe if it's a situation where the UFC were banned in a territory and they had their first event there since the ban as with UFC 205, that would receive non-trivial coverage and would be worth mentioning, but that's not the case here.
Also there's a full-length article in the Washington Post which explicitly connects Roosevelt's use of the White House as a fight venue to the UFC White House card. "On Sunday, the White House plans to host “UFC Freedom 250,” as part of the celebrations honoring the semiquincentennial anniversary of American independence. ... It will not be the first time the White House has served as a fighting arena." We follow what WP:RS say and the Washington Post believes the events are comparable and the connection is relevant to mention. NICHOLAS NEEDLEHAM (talk) 09:18, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
That is trivia. You're removing information that has always been added and justifying it by adding your Roosevelt personal trivia stats to it. That being said, if you were able to gather relevant consensus on that trivia of yours, then there would be nothing else to question. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 12:14, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Again, whether trivia has been added to other articles is not a justification to add trivia to this article. If someone added typos to one article, should we add typos to this article too?
Consensus is not a vote, you need to provide reasoning why we should ignore reliable sources such as the Washington Post which deem the connection relevant between Roosevelt's use of the White House as a fight venue and the UFC White House event. Simply saying it is "trivia" is not an argument if you also claim detail about the event being the UFC's third or fourth or whatever visit to Washington DC is not trivia. NICHOLAS NEEDLEHAM (talk) 12:41, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
You're adding poor arguments to your cause. It is relevant to add when the organization last came to that location, just like every single sports event does.
That being said, you should rephrase your trivia to better adjust the article. Still, consensus is not a vote, but your opinion alone on that (which was added by you) is not consensus as well. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 12:54, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Example: This will be the first major sports events held at the White House grounds. The site previously had several amateur events related to previous presidents, including boxing matches held inside the residence by President Theodore Roosevelt. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 13:17, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Above you say that the detail about event location doesn't apply to Las Vegas events, so it's contradictory to say that every single sports event states "This is the XYZth time an event has been held here, the last time was XYZ days/months/years ago". I would agree if it's the first visit to a new territory or a notable situation as I mentioned with UFC 205 above, there should be non-trivial coverage in those cases, but l don't see what it adds to the reader to tell them it's the third/fourth/whatever visit to DC.
I appreciate the effort to rephrase the Roosevelt sentence, I wouldn't have a problem with that version. NICHOLAS NEEDLEHAM (talk) 14:34, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
LV events take place more than once each month, so it is clearly unnecessary to mention that the last event there took place a week before. You keep making it worse and reassuring the remaining editors stance against your behavior. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 21:22, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The third visit to Washington DC content is relevant because "every single sports event" includes information as to when the event location last hosted an event, unless it's UFC events in Las Vegas, then that information is "clearly unnecessary" because events are frequently held there?
So it's not "every single sports event", it's not even every UFC event. What's the justification then as to why we need to include trivia that it's the third or fourth or whatever time the UFC has held an event in Washington DC? NICHOLAS NEEDLEHAM (talk) 11:49, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I side with Gsfelipe on this and am not sure why this has turned into such a big deal, other than the fact it got reverted a bunch of times and has now become something to dig your heels into. Nswix (talk) 14:52, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 17:39, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Edit

[edit]

First of all, turning this article into a fully protected one is completely unnecessary. It will be horrible to add every single edit here and wait for an administrator (none are regular mma editors) to update the article. To keep it until after the event has taken place is even worse. Anyway, please make the following change to the end of the legal challenges section:

I second Gsfelipe that full protection until after the event is concluded is unnecessary and I find myself puzzled, even after looking at WP:RPP, why can't the edit warriors just be page banned for a few days. I'll expand this list as I find more points for improvement.
  • Since the event in done already and it's been around a week, we can start expanding the lead. The summary in the lead can be handy for those unfamiliar with UFC or similar events.

  • I suggest adding another source such as this to verify that this is the only UFC event to end with all fights ending by knockout such as this Time report. This could be a loose application of WP:EXCEPTIONAL.
  • He also reported that Pereira vs. Gane had initially been planned as the main event before the promotion asked Topuria whether he preferred to face Makhachev at welterweight or Gaethje at lightweight. Topuria reportedly chose Makhachev, but the bout was not made after Makhachev was unavailable due to a hand injury, leading to Gaethje receiving the title fight. There seems to be an abrupt sentence end around "before the promotion asked Topuria". We can also shorten the second sentence through a copyedit.
