Notes

A further 11 members were added to the UNESCO-assisted network in 2010 as listed in the UNESCO press release at http://www.unesco.org/new/en/media-services/single-view/news/eleven_sites_added_to_global_geoparks_network/ (retrieved 21st October 2010) Incidentally, in advice to members of the EGN, UNESCO currently inists that the global network not be labelled as the UNESCO Network etc but as, for example, the UNESCO-assisted Network . . Some on the list currently are no longer members of the GGN having either pulled our or failed their revalidations eg Mecklenburg and Lochaber - I will have to find documentation to back this up before removing them from the list. Geopersona (talk) 05:41, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

The 2014 map is even more outdated after the April 2018 additions which include Mexico and Iran (again), Thailand and Belgium for example. cheers Geopersona (talk) 20:39, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

I have revised the list following the 2019 designations, for all countries except China, where 9 sites are missing (I will try to get to that revision soon). Source is the official UNESCO list on www.unesco.org/geoparks .

Concerning the 2014 map, perhaps it would be best to remove it. UNESCO has a map of all designated geoparks (not color-coded by countries, but a point map with each site) I will check with the secretariat as it may be open access. Sc ex nat (talk) 10:43, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Former members

I've moved Lochaber to the list of former members. I can't find anything official from any UNESCO site about it losing Geopark status, but the BBC seems pretty definite about it [1].

I also tried to find something about the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark which according to the Wikipedia page used to be a member up to 2008, but I can't find anything official anywhere about its loss of membership. Pasicles (talk) 01:58, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

There was a news item about the Iranian geopark of Qeshm Island losing its GGN Geopark status at the end of 2012 but I can't relocate it. If someone can, then perhaps the page can be updated. Geopersona (talk) 06:18, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Transnational Geoparks

There are a handful of transnational geoparks within Europe and which are currently listed just once in the list. If sorting by country, wanting to know what Global Geoparks there were in Germany, it would not be immediately apparent that for example Muskau Arch Geopark (which is listed Poland / Germany) is one of them, as it would appear further down the list. A minor point perhaps but is this the best way to list the transational ones? cheers Geopersona (talk) 09:33, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Agreed, in fact this is how the UNESCO Secretariat has also edited their list, so the transnational sites can be found by country / for each country. I have implemented in the list while updating for 2019. I hope that is ok. Sc ex nat (talk) 10:46, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Dates of acceptance into network

I've added dates for most of those which had dates missing - some of the dates came from various pages on the GGN website, others came from the websites of the various geoparks themselves. I've not been able to find them all as yet; Ore of the Alps, Troodos and Lanzarote which are all 2014 or 2015 I believe. cheers Geopersona (talk) 20:24, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Qeshm Geopark

I'd rather prefer a general column for comment where such information can be introduced (for example de-listed, re-listed, and so on)

Qeshm Island is back in as is Maestrazgo - I've simply deleted them from the 'former geoparks' list as being simplest; they are current geoparks and in the main list. Details of their membership can always be found at their own articles. I suspect the listing by continent still requires an update if anyone wants to look at that. Geoparks in Germany

I' am just revising the lists on the German Wikipedia where not even the 2017 listings have been introduced up to now. It is cool that one day after the decision, the new geoparks are already listed here. Thanks to the updater. The 2017 listings, however, are not included here, either.

Further, I noticed a mass in the German geoparks. Germany presently has six global geoparks, the list has eight. Vulkaneifel and Terra Vita are listed twice. Mecklenburg Lake Plateau is not (no longer?) a global geopark. Instead, Muskau Arch Geopark is missing (transboundary with Poland, global geopark since 2011) Please check and correct. --Bjs (talk) 10:54, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I've removed the two duplicates. I know that Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape Geopark (as it was known) left the network a few years ago. cheers Geopersona (talk) 18:24, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks a lot. Perhaps in such cases it would pe preferable to have 2005-2011 indicated in the year column?

I didn't check the other countries, but I found that there is no entry for 2017. Instead, some of the geoparks included in May 2017 (see here), are indicated as 2018, others appear to be missing. Please check and correct. --Bjs (talk) 20:43, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Tweaking column content

Continuing the discussion threads in Qeshm Island and Geoparks in Germany above, since Geoparks not only become members of the network and on occasion leave the network and, as in Qeshm's case re-join, the final column might be relabelled (for example) 'Period of membership' and its contents read for example: 2009-2015, 2017-present. Lochaber was a member and is looking to re-join. Maestrazgo was a member and - may yet become so again. There are a few other examples of which I'm aware. What do you think? We ought to be able, with a little research, to pin down references to the exact years in which various members joined and left. cheers Geopersona (talk) 06:49, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

That's a jolly good idea. IMHO, 'Membership' is sufficent as a column title, and instead of "2017-present", "2017-" or "since 2017" may also be used.

The German Wikipedia has 2004-2008 for Abberley & Malvern Hills, 2007-2011 for Lochaber, 2005-2011 for Mecklenburg, and 2006-2012 for Qeshm. Maestrazgo is still listed as a present Global Geopark. Muskau

"Muskau Arch Geopark" it is also called at the GGN Website. On the [http://www.unesco.org/new/en/natural-sciences/environment/earth-sciences/unesco-global-geoparks/list-of-unesco-global-geoparks/ UNESCO Website however, it is designated in German/Polish as "Muskauer Faltenbogen / Łuk Mużakowa". --Bjs (talk) 13:09, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

We're encouraged on WP to adopt for titles the name most commonly used/encountered by the public and in English, I'd reckon that must be Muskau Arch. I think there are cases to be made for scrutiny of the names of certain other members of the geopark family - obviously where more than one is in circulation, we'd go on to list them in the intro to the article. Infobox

I think there are numerous entries in the infobox currently which are either incorrect or unhelpful - all of the 'possibly's for example - doesn't really provide any assistance to someone looking at this article, probably better left blank. Equally the 'designation' item - again with ref to the UK, by definition, none are any of the other designations if they are ' UNESCO Global' - I think that will be true more widely too. cheers Geopersona (talk) 06:57, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
