Brazos Class
editFrom Fleet Oiler (AO) Photo Index: AO-4 Brazos:
- AO-4 Brazos was a Brazos Class Fleet Oiler (other classifications vary as well) WP:CITE.--Lordkinbote 02:40, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- I suppose it could be disputed as to which class it belongs in. Here are my sources saying that it is a Kanawha class [1] [2] True they may very well be mistaken and one may take its info from the other site. What I've found from looking up older USN ships is that there is often conflicting info regarding class. Usually it's because some modifications were made to a ship which changed it significantly. Since there are no other ships of the Brazos class, perhaps it was lumped into a neighboring class. I can't say for sure. But I'd like to come to some sort of community consensus regarding this ships class. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 03:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that this is an unusual circumstance, and DANFS is certainly not infallible. There are other sites such as [3] that obviously mirror that site, and here's one [4] that hints that Brazos, Neches, and Pecos are "related" to one another but not to Kanawha, Maumee, and Cuyama (hence I'm not convinced that the Internet can settle this issue). I'll try contacting the ship's "reunion committee" to see if anyone associated there can shed light on this:

I received the following response to my email today:
- Our research shows in the 1940 "Bluejackets' Manual on page 188 it is classified as an Auxiliary Oiler, hence the AO-4. On page 197 is the picture of the Fleet Oiler U. S. S Neches. This ship and the U. S. S. Pecos and the U. S. S. Brazos were all sister ships. Also, in the 1946 Bluejackets Manual, on page 185 note the bow of the oiler. I hope this has been a help to you. We have been gone for several days and just returned, so this is the reason for the delay in answering.
- Sincerely, Henry Vancik
Hence, I've modified the article text and added the Kanawha class template to reflect the same.--Lordkinbote 07:03, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
