Meritorious Unit Citation
editUSS Callaghan received the Meritorious Unit Citation for KAL007 unit operations in 1983.

CALLAGHAN was not the first US Navy ship on-scene at the KAL-007 crash site: we were sent in when the first ship's helicopter had a casualty, because we were the closest unit with an operational helo. CALLAGHAN also received a special citation from the government of South Korea for KAL-007 search/salvage operations.

Inaccuracy in American Home Port information:
CALLAGHAN HOME PORT was NOT NAS North Island, at least not from 1987-90 when I was a Boatswain's Mate onboard. We were homeported out of 32sd st. Naval Station. Also spent a year in overhaul at the now defunct South West Marine in San Diego, CA and then another period at the Naval Shipyards in Long Beach, CA, during that time period. Neutrality tag
editThis article needs some cleanup for NPOV. It is pretty clear that a former crewmember added the paragraph about the events of September 1, 1983. The information in that paragraph needs to be cited and should be rewritten from a neutral point of view; this is not the US Navy Wikipedia. Maralia 19:28, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
The paragraph about the events of September 1, 1983 involving the search and rescue of survivors of Korean Airlines Flight 007 has been rewritten for NPOV and cited references. The previous verbiage was cringeworthy at best. Hope this helps! Max Density (talk) 23:50, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
