Please note that the photo shown at this WIKIPEDIA web page is not of the USS Mendota, but of another gunboat in that class (the SASSACUS class double ender gunboats), namely the USS Agawam. I have complete evidence for this statement, as I have four photos, including the one shown, which were from the collections of Heman P. Babcock, the surgeon of the USS Agawam. Furthermore, there is actually a photo of the USS Mendota, and the differences from the Agawam can clearly be seen, such as the steam pipe next to the funnel, on the USS Mendota, which was not on the Agawam. Also, the wheelhouse design of the USS Agawam and the USS Mendota are different, and this difference can be clearly seen, as well. There are several other differences that can be noted, on closer examination of the photos of both vessels.
