editMy father, Roy D. Kjelland reported for duty aboard the PCS-1379 on March 6, 1944 at Lido Beach, Long Island, NY to Capt. F. R. Lackey, USNR and Lieutenant E. U. O'Donnell USNR, commanding officer.
I know that she sailed through the Panama Canal to Hawaii before participating in combat.
Crossed the equator at 163 deg East, north to south on Aug 23, 1944.
Participated in Invasion of Peleliu Island and Angaur Island, of the Palau Group on Sep 15-17, 1944.
Shelled Japanese targets on Eil Malk and Abappaomogan Islands, of the Palau Group on Oct 30-31 Nov 1, 1944.
Participated in invasion of of the Ryukyu Islands as follows: Kerama Retto March 26-31, 1945 Okinawa April 1, 1945 Menna Shima April 15, 1945 Ie Shima April 16, 1945
On Aug 1, 1945 my father received the Phillippine Liberation Ribbon.
She returned to Hawaii, and then back through the Panama Canal reaching Long Island, NY on or around Aug 15, 1945.
