i was aboard sanctuary when she was recommissioned in 1966, and i do not recall a recompression chamber. i could, of course be wrong. but hyperbaric therapy was unknown at the time ( i think.), so the only use would have been for recompressing divers. bottom line, a citation is needed for this. comment is needed on the command within a coomand structure of hospital ships. this i will take care of.Toyokuni3 (talk) 01:44, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

i have tagged the statement that sanctuary 'carried' 1 aircraft. i can find no no such claim in any of the references, and know from personal experience that during her first tour in nam, no helo was permanently embarked in sanctuary. nor did we have any naval aviators as part of her crew.the permanent presence of a helo aboard would hve been counterproductive, as it would have had to take off every time others arrived. the helo deck was only big enough to accomodate one at a a time.Toyokuni3 (talk) 15:57, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

USS Sanctuary departure date from Da Nang, South Vietnam

I was aboard the USS Sanctuary when she left Da Nang, South Vietnam. The article posted on Wikipedia had the ship leaving country on 23 April, 1971. The ship actually left 8 days later on 1 May, 1971.

The Captain kept us there the extra time so that we could all receive an additional month of hazardous duty pay. I know that we left on 1 May, because that was my 20th birthday and I will always remember that wonderful birthday present.

unfortunately, i have had to revert your edit re. the ship's final departure from vietnamese waters, until you provide a reference. see my note above. i am fairly certain there was no recompression chamber aboard in 1966, but that is my recollection,and the referenced source apparently says there was. so, by the wikipedia rules, the score stands at reference 1 - memory 0.Toyokuni3 (talk) 21:58, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

I was aboard the USS Sanctuary Jan 1970 n-Nov. 1970. I was Corpsman, Cardio-Pulmonary tech. I was a rider on the Hyperbaric Chamber with casualities that benefited from the treatments of going down, pressure, of O2. Increasing the PO2 through-out the body. Chamber was located under the flight deck. Had near death experience in chamber when there was no release of pressure out side of chamber when releasing pressure in chamber. locked at 100 feet. There is a story here. Want to know more or if you are familiar with incident and want to discuss give me a heads up: mcmullen.r@comcast.net. This occurred summer 1971. There were 4 corpsman trapped in chamber, when the miracle took place we 4 did not report incident due to our chief would have been severely disciplined. To this day only a hand-ful know the story.
